What is Plantar Flexion?

Plantar flexion is defined as a movement of the body where the upper or the top portion of the foot is pointed away of the legs. The plantar flexion is used in conditions where an individual stands supported on the tip of their toes or they point their toes. Every individual has their different range of movement in Plantar flexion position. There are various different muscles which controls the plantar flexion. It has been observed that injuries of any kind to these specific muscles may have the ability to limit the series of movement and motion and affect your ability to perform functions which necessitate plantar flexion. There are several types of daily routine and activities which involves the practice of plantar flexion. One of the best example of daily routine practice of plantar flexion is pressing of the foot towards down of the gas pedal in the car.

Another example of plantar flexion is the posture we perform by standing on the tip of our toes when we try to reach any object kept on the higher shelf or higher locations. plantar flexion has been practiced in various dance forms, one of the best example of which is Ballet dancing; ballet dancers dance on their toes focusing on the tip portion (en pointe). Though the plantar flexion is used in every motion of human being, but there are specific motions which specifically highlight the plantar flexion. The daily routine and activities which relies on plantar flexion are walking, swimming, running, biking, jumping and dancing. Almost each and every outdoor activity or sports are found to require the performance of plantar flexion. Thus it makes it important for the sporty personality or dances to take appropriate care of their ankles and the muscles surrounding the specific portion of the body to every extent possible.

What is dorsiflexion and how does it effects planter flexion?

Dorsiflexion is the movement where the foot and the hand are motioned by contracting and bending in the backward manner. It is the extended portion of an individual’s foot at the position of ankle and also at the hand at the position of the wrist. Dorsiflexion can also be done on the portion of an individual’s fingers and the portion of toes, though it is used basically for the representation of an individual’s wrist or ankle. Dorsiflexion is found to be occurring in the region of ankle when an individual try for drawing their toes in a backward direction toward their shins. While an individual tends to dorsiflex their foot, contraction of the shinbones and bending of the ankle joint take place. An individual has the ability to dorsiflex their foot as they lift the ball of the foot away from the ground in the position of standing by keeping their heel attached to the ground.

The Dorsiflexion of the human hand or the wrist takes place in conditions of bending or twisting of the wrist joint in the backwards motion toward the lower arm. This can be done by extending the arm and the hand towards the front over a flat surface. Also lifting of the hand backwards with the fingers leading the motion with the arm kept still. Dorsiflexion is also found to take place when the palms of the hands are brought together towards the front of the chest similar to a prayer pose.

Both Dorsiflexion and Plantar Flexion are different from one another as, Plantar flexion focuses on the movement and motion of the foot in the direction facing downwards in 20 to 50 degrees and Dorsiflexion focuses on the movement and motion of the foot in the direction facing up wards to 10 to 30 degree. The plantar flexion is used in conditions where an individual stands supported on the tip of their toes or they point their toes. Whereas Dorsiflexion is found to be occurring in the region of ankle when an individual try for drawing their toes in a backward direction toward their shins.

What does Inversion refer to?

Inversion occurred as a movement where the sole or the plantar surface of the portion of the foot rotates in the direction of the mid-line of the human body. It can also be stated that it is a movement in which the sole or the plantar surface of the foot rotates medially or can be said that it turns in the direction of inwards. Inversion is defined as the movement of the portion of the foot the reason behind causing of the feet’s sole portion to face in the direction of inwards. Inversion are found to be primarily occurring at the Talocalcaneonavicular joint and the Subtalar (talocalcaneal) joint. The muscles which are the reason behind the occurrence of inversion of the foot portion are the Tibialis anterior and the Tibialis posterior. The injuries to the Inversion of the ankle are found to be very common, and they result in causing ankle sprain which affects the ligaments of the ankles on the lateral side. The most frequently occurring condition is the anterior talofibular ligament which is around 70-85% of the ankle sprains that are caused by the occurrence of the forceful inversion as well as the calcaneofibular ligament gets torn. In ankle sprain, often the posterior talofibular ligament gets affected and torn.

What is contracture of ankle joint?

A contracture malformation is defined as the result of rigorousness or may be the tightening occurring in the connective tissues of ab individual’s body. This condition is found to occurs in the tendons, muscles, ligaments, and the regions of the skin. A plantar flexion contracture is explained as the condition where portion of the ankle and the foot are not in a state to plantar flex or can be said that they are not able to bend downward. The occurrence of this condition are the reason behind developing difficulties in a person to walk and run. Plantar flexion contractures are conditions which are generally treated with several different type of stretches and practicing exercises of the body joints.

Ankle Flexion Contracture is stated as the physical condition which results in the incompetence which occurs while bring the ankle near around 0º by the means of reflexive range of motion. It is caused by the restriction of the muscles and the sinews which serves for the plantar flex the ankle and these ligament and tendons are the Achilles Tendon and the Deltoid Ligament. The ankle which is positioned near around 0º is stated as the standard position of the foot ankle and also in conditions where the foot is placed upright to the lower leg. Ankle Flexion Contracture may be occurred due to the untreated Foot Drop conditions. Foot Drop and the Contractures are one of the very often occurring conditions in case of the stroke patients with the earlier experience of any kind of paralysis. In order to restore the condition, it has been guided that splints needs to be worn over the portions or location of the pressure area. It has also been observed that performing multiple range of movement and motion exercises are helpful for such conditions. The range of motion (ROM) exercises are found to be quite helpful in keeping the muscles and the body joints of the effected limbs in a flexible state.
