After the Mexican revolution took place, murals became a tool for various purposes such as mass education and for political propaganda and others. The painting of Diego Rivera Sugarcane became one of the paintings that aimed at showing the struggles of the Mexican people in that era. These paintings also help in decorating spaces in a stylish way. Diego Rivera was a follower of the concept of Marxism and therefore his paintings were focus on depicting the struggle of different classes in that period. He also focused on showing racism and colonialism. He supported the people belonging to the working class irrespective of the fact that many of the patrons belonging to the wealth American families supported him. The poet of the painting was born in Mexico and got his training from Europe and therefore his paintings combined the traditional and modern techniques. Rivera’s portable murals allowed the public to see his work while he was also connected to public painting tradition. The techniques of wall painting has its origin in Mexico and Italy. The main message behind this portable mural is to make the public aware of the social tensions that people of that post Mexican revolution era used to face. This included- economic inequality, racism, labour and many others. All these incidents started happening after the Mexican revolution. In the painting the audience can see an Indian women wearing white clothes and having braids collecting papaya from trees while the children are seen collecting those papayas in the basket in the picture. The Indian woman seems to belong to the peasant class. In the same picture, we can also see dark coloured men collecting bunches of sugar cane with their heads bowed down. It is observed that a foreman who has slightly lighter skin colour than them watches these people while sitting on a horse back. And again in the background we can see a wealthy landlord taking rest in hammock. In this picture, we can therefore say that the poet has adopted the ideas of Marxism trying to show the struggle of the classes and also showing an understanding of the Industrialized Europe. Mexico was an agrarian country till the World War 2.The poet tries to give the message of discrimination on the basis of colour, and class and the conflict that took place between the people with dark skinned and the people with lighter skins. The poet tries to take us to a different time through his drawing and therefore this picture also provides us with a travel experience. The painting though created during 1931 and 1932 gives us a message that is beyond any time frame. A message of class discrimination and the struggles of the people. Rivera love the concept of ultra-modernization, technological advancement and many more, yet his urban love does not affect his love for humanity. He believed the murals and he belied that New York was the best place for wall painting and this is how the concept of portable murals took place in order to let all the new Yorkers to see the same.
