The Metamorphosis is the story regarding a man named Gregor Samsa that wakes up one morning to discover himself transformed strangely in a big insect which afterward struggled to adjust in his new surroundings. He at first thought that the transformation was temporary and slowly thinks the consequences of this metamorphosis. Gregor was neither able to get into bed nor he was able to leave and reflects about his employment as travelling salesman and merchant of cloth that he characterizes as the fatiguing and never ending stream of traffic. He considers his employer as despot and thinks of immediately leaving the job given that he was not the sole income earning member of his family and working to clear the bankrupts of his father’s debts. In an attempt to move, Gregor discovers that his office manager, chief clerk has come to check him, annoyed about his unexcused absenteeism.

Gregor tries to communicate with his manager and family but only an incomprehensive voice can be heard from behind the door. Upon witnessing Gregor’s transformation, the manager flees from his apartment. The family members of Gregor is horrified and under the threat of forcefulness his father takes him back to room. The unanticipated incapacitation of Gregor’s, deprives his family of their financial stability. Even though his sister Grete shies away from his sight, she supplies him with food which he can only eat rotten. Gregor finally accepts his identity and starts crawling on walls, floor and ceiling.

On noticing Gregor’s new pastime, Grete removes few furniture to provide him with more space. On noticing Gregor’s sister and her mother taking away the furniture, he is deeply annoyed. Gregor badly attempts to save a portrait on wall of a woman dressed in fur. His mother loses awareness on seeing Gregor clinging on the image to safeguard it. When a nurse hurries to help Gregor’s mother, he follows her and is hurt by a medicine bottle when it falls on his face. When his father returns home he angrily tosses apples at Gregor and on one occasion he is hit on his sensitive spot which wounds him severely.

For several weeks Gregor suffers from his injury and consumes less food. His family neglects him and his room was used as storage. To secure his livelihood, the family allows three tenants in his apartment. The housework lady eases Gregor’s isolation by leaving his door open for him during the evening when the tenants eat out. On one occasion, Gregor’s room door is left open and he is spotted by his tenant, who complains regarding the unhygienic condition of apartment and finally cancel their tenancy. Grete was tired of looking after Gregor and consider him as burden to his family. Gregor understands that he is not wanted in his family and dies of starvation. His family is relieved and decides to move to smaller house. Mr and Mrs Samsa realizes that, Grete is now grown up as pretty lady and her parents are now considering finding a husband for Grete.
