### Fraction

A fraction refers to a part or whole of any number having equal of parts. Referring to the daily English, a fraction describes how many parts of a certain specified size exists, for example, one-half, eight-fifths, three-quarters. A common, vulgar or simple fraction consists of an integer numerator which is displayed above a line and a non-zero integer denominator displayed below that particular line.  Numerators and denominators are also used in fractions that are not common, including that of compound fractions, complex fractions and mixed numerals.

The study of fractions begin with common fractions which are positive which consists of numerators and denominators which are natural numbers. The numerators represent numbers having equal parts, and the denominators make an indication of how many parts make up a unit or a whole. The denominator cannot have the value equal to zero, because the zero parts cannot make up the whole. For example, if the fraction is ¾, then the numerator is 3 which tells that the fraction represents 3 equal parts, and the denominator is 4 which tells that 4 parts are there as a whole. The fraction can taken to be that of a cake which represents that ¾th of the cake is left and only one part of the cake is eaten, vice versa the fraction can also tell that 3/4th of the fraction is eaten and only one part of the cake is left.

A common fraction is a numeral which represents the term known as “rational number”. That same number can also be represented as of a decimal, a percent, or with a negative exponent. Other similar uses of fraction can be that of the representation of ratios and division. Hence, the fraction ¾ is also implemented to use and represent the ratio 3:4 and the division form being 3÷4. The non-zero denominator in the case of using a fraction to make the representation of division is a wide example of the rule that division by zero carries or results to an undefined value.

There is also the existence of negative fractions in contrast to positive fractions. For example, if ½ makes the representation of half dollar profit, then - ½ makes the representation of loss of half a dollar. Also in the field of mathematics, the set of all numbers can be expressed with the help of the form a/b, in which a and b both are integers and b does not carry the value of a zero, and is referred to as the set for rational numbers and is represented with the help of symbol Q, which stands for the quotient. The test which implies on the fact to check whether a number is rational or not is to represent the number in that form. However, the term ‘fraction’ also is referred to the process of describing mathematical expressions that do not belong to the set of rational numbers, for example the algebraic fractions and the equations which are consisting of irrational numbers such as the square root of 2.

In a fraction, the number of equal parts being described is referred to as the numerator and type or the variety of the different part is the denominator. For example, the fraction 8/5 amounts to eight parts, each of which is of the type named “fifth”. In terms related to division, the numerator corresponds to the dividend and the denominator corresponds to the divisor. In an informal way, the numerator and denominator may be differentiated by the placement alone but within the formal contexts they are always separated by a bar which is referred to as the “fraction bar”. This term referred to as the “fraction bar” may be horizontal, oblique or diagonal. These marks are respectively known as the horizontal bar, the slash or stroke, the division slash and the fraction slash.

### Numerators and Denominators

The first look of a fraction involves the inclusion of two numbers, commonly referred to as the top number and the bottom number. These two numbers are generally referred to as the numerator and the denominator respectively, and both of them refer to different things. The simplest way using which the numerator and the denominator can be defined is,

• Numerator- the number present at the top of the fraction.
• Denominator- the number present at the bottom of the fraction.

Exploring the numerator and the denominator which forms the part of the fraction is the primary component of a fraction. In other words, fraction represent a certain specified part of a whole object or substance. Within a fraction, the denominator represents the number of equal parts in a whole and the numerator represents exactly how many parts are being considered of the object as a whole. We can take a fraction as p/q is as p parts, which refers to the numerator of a whole object, which is again divided into q equal parts of equal size which is the denominator. As an example, in the fraction 5/9, the numerator is 5 and the denominator is 9, so the fraction 5/9 means 5 parts of a whole object which is divided into 9 parts of carrying size which are exactly equal.

### Pizza fraction

Pizza fraction refers to all kinds of sums which are related to that of pizza in which a picture of a pizza which is given with a number of slices missing. The sum is to find the fraction of either the amount of pizza which is left or maybe the fraction of pizza which is eaten. For example, if a certain kind of pizza can be divided into 8 slices, out of which 3 slices of pizza have been eaten away, then it is needed to find out the fraction of pizza which is left. The 8 slices is the whole, so that goes down to the denominator, on the other hand the three slices of pizza which have been eaten away leaving behind 5 slices of pizza which goes to the numerator. So,

The fraction of pizza which is left = Similarly, if the fraction of pizza which is eaten away is to be calculated, it goes like,

The fraction of pizza eaten  = This is how the calculations related to the pizza fraction is being carried out.

### Examples of pizza fraction and puppy fraction

For example, if a pizza is divided into half, then either of fractions be it the eaten away fraction or the left over fraction is ½. Similarly, if the pizza is divided into 4 parts, then if 1 part is eaten then the fraction of the left over part is ¾. Lastly, if a pizza is divided into 8 equal parts, after which 5 slices are eaten away then the remaining part of the fraction is denoted by the fraction 3/8.

Example of puppy fraction includes that, if the fraction is in the form of ½, 3/6, 9/18, etc. which implies that the numerator is exactly the half of the value which is present in the denominator. The numerator value and the denominator value are correlated and when the numerator is either multiplied with 2 we get the value which is there in the denominator as the answer, or if the denominator is divided with the number 2 then we get the value which is there on the numerator as the answer. This is the most common example of a puppy fraction.
