What Is a Homogeneous Mixture? How Is It Formed?

Referencing Styles : APA | Pages : 1

Mixture

A mixture is a thing that consists of two or more substances. In the first place, the substances that are present in a mixture cannot be equal, which in simple terms mean a mixture cannot have half of one substance and half of another. The second thing is, in order to be considered a mixture there should not be any chemical relation between the substances.

Definition of homogeneous mixture

If in a given mixture sample of solid, liquid or gas, the mixture contains the same proportion of the components throughout the sample, then the mixture is known as homogeneous mixture. In case of heterogeneous mixture the proportions may vary throughout the sample. In the context of chemistry, the volume is half in a homogenous suspension, the suspension happens in equal amount in both half of the substance. This suspension of the particles can be observed under a microscope. Air can be an example of the homogeneous mixture. In the context of physical chemistry and material science, homogeneous mixture is referred to as a substance or a mixture that is present in a single phase. The context of the term is in contrast to a heterogeneous substance.

In simple terms, the compositions that are same throughout are commonly known as homogeneous mixtures. To the physical eye, these mixtures appear uniformly same throughout. The reason behind the uniform appearance of these mixtures is that the substances that comprise these mixtures are at a molecular level. Homogeneous mixtures are sometimes called as solutions. Some examples of the homogeneous mixtures can be Air, sugar water, rain water, Vinegar, Vodka, Steel, liquid dishwashing detergents.

Heterogeneous mixture

To the contrary, where in the mixture the components are not uniform or that contains localized regions that have different properties is known as heterogeneous mixtures. In a heterogeneous mixture, there are two or more than two phases always and, different samples from a single mixture are not identical to each other. Due to the presence more than two phases in the heterogeneous mixture, the properties of a region in the mixture are different from the rest of the other regions, even in that same state of matter, which can be solid, liquid or gas. Some examples of heterogeneous mixtures can be a bowl of cereal with milk, pizza, blood of any living object, ice in soda, soil, a bowl of colored candies, a bowl of vegetable soup and many more.

The substances of the components of a heterogeneous mixture can be separated physically. For example the ice cubes from a glass of soda can be removed, from the bowl of candies the same colored candies can be separated, in case of blood, the plasma of the blood and the solid blood cells can also be separated. But, in a homogeneous mixture the components cannot be separated using some simple mechanical means. The distinctions of the components are not possible to the naked human eye in case of homogenous mixtures. In addition, there is only one phase in a homogeneous mixture.
