What Is Dysrhythmia? Discuss Its Causes Symptoms And Treatment In Detail

Referencing Styles : APA | Pages : 1

The term Dysrhythmia is generated from the Greek, with the word ‘dys’ that means bad and ‘rhythmia’ that means rhythm. The term Dysrhythmia is applied with regard to brainwaves, and most often it is related to the heart rhythm. In simple terms cardiac Dysrhythmia is the abnormal heartbeat that the rhythm of the heart can be irregular in pacing or heart rate can be high or low. Some of the Dysrhythmia can be life threatening while the other Dysrhythmia like sinus arrhythmia can be normal. Dysrhythmia can be chronic or acute and sudden cardiac deathis most severe manifestation for the ventricular arrhythmias.

Types of heart Dysrhythmia can be classified as follows –

  • Tachycardia is fast heart rhythm that is more than 100 beats per minute and can be originated in ventricles or atria. Dysrhythmia that is originated in atria is known as supraventricular dysrhythmia. These dysrhythmias include - Atrial flutter, Atrial fibrillation, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and Paroxysmal Supraventricular tachycardia. On the other hand, ventricular dysrhythmias start in ventricles and include Premature ventricular contractions, Ventricular fibrillation and Long QT syndrome.
  • Bardycardia is the slow heart rhythm that is less than 60 beats per minute. It is slow heart rhythm generated from the disease in cardiac electrical conduction system. It includes Sick Sinus Syndrome, Sinus bradycardia and Conduction Block.
  • A premature beat is the extra beat that occurs earlier than the normal one. Irrespective of being the extra beat, patients can indicate the feeling of the skipped beat.

Different causes of Dysrhythmia

Any interruption to electrical impulses that leads the heart to contract may result into Dysrhythmia. For any person with the healthy heart, he shall have heart rate between 60 and 100 per minute while resting. More the person is fit; lower will be their resting heart rate. For instance, Olympic athletes will generally have the heart rate while resting in less than 60 beats per minute as their hearts are more efficient. Various factors those may lead hearts to work in incorrect manners includes –

  • Alcohol abuse
  • Drug abuse
  • Diabetes
  • Excessive coffee consumption
  • Heart disease like congestive heart failure
  • Hypertension  that is high blood pressure
  • hyperthyroidism that is an overactive thyroid gland
  • Scarring of the heart, often the result of a heart attack
  • Mental stress
  • Smoking
  • Some dietary supplements
  • Some herbal treatments
  • Some medications
  • Structural changes of the heart

Any healthy person will rarely suffer from the long term dysrhythmia unless that have any external trigger like electrical shock or drug abuse. If any underlying problem is there the electrical impulses may not be able to transfer through heart in correct manner that will increase the chances of dysrhythmia.

Symptoms of dysrhythmia

Some of the patients do not have any symptoms but the doctor may detect the same during routine check-ups or during EKG. Even if any patient notices the symptoms, it is not necessary that there is serious problem. For instance, some of the patients with life threatening dysrhythmia may not face any symptoms while the others may not have any serious problems. Symptoms are dependent upon the types of dysrhythmia. Common symptoms are as follows –

Symptoms of tachycardia that is while heart beats quicker as compared to normal are as follows –

  • Breathlessness that is dyspnea
  • Dizziness
  • Syncope that includes fainting, or nearly fainting
  • Fluttering in the chest
  • Chest pain
  • Lightheadedness
  • Sudden weakness

Symptoms of bradycardia that is while heart beats slower as compared to normal are as follows –

  • Trouble concentrating
  • Confusion
  • Difficulties when exercising
  • Dizziness
  • fatigue (tiredness)
  • Lightheadedness
  • Palpitations
  • Shortness of breath
  • Syncope (fainting or nearly fainting)
  • Diaphoresis, or sweating
  • Angina that is concentrating

Atrial fibrillation is while upper chambers of heart bets in irregular pattern and out of the synchrony with lower chamber. Often the symptoms develop rapidly, although for some of the there are no sympotoms. Symptoms of atrial fibrillation are –

  • Angina (chest pain)
  • Breathlessness (dyspnea)
  • Dizziness
  • Palpitations
  • Syncope (fainting, or nearly fainting)
  • Weakness

Treatments for dysrhythmia in detail

Treatments for dysrhythmia are required only when the condition is putting the patient in risk of more serious dysrhythmia or the complication if there are severe symptoms.

Treatment for bradycardia

If bradycardia is caused through underlying condition and the condition is required to be treated 1st. however, if any underlying problem is not recognized, doctor may advise to implement pacemaker. Pacemaker is the small device placed under skin of abdomen or chest for controlling the abnormal rhythms of heart. Pacemaker uses the electrical pulses for prompting heart to beat at the normal minimum rate.

Treatment for tachycardia

Numbers of different treatments for tachycardia are as follows –

  • Medications – it does not cure the patient however are effective to reduce episode tachycardia and may assist with appropriate conduction of heart.
  • Vagal maneuvers – some of the movements that can be done by the patients by their own may stop some types of dysrhythmia that starts over the lower half of heart.
  • Cardioversion – here the doctor may use the medication or electric shock for resetting the heart and bring it to normal rhythm.
  • ICD or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator – this device is implemented close to the left collarbone and monitors the rhythm of heart. It stimulates heart for returning to the normal rhythm.
  • Ablation therapy – one or more of the catheters go though the blood vessels into inner heart. They are placed in the areas of heart those are considered to be source of dysrhythmia and destroy the small sections of those tissues.
  • Maze procedure – it is a series of the surgical incisions those are made in heart. Then they heal into the scars and form the blocks. These blocks guide electrical impulses and help the heart to beat in different way.
