Allusion is defined as the brief along with indirect reference to place, person, thing or idea of historical, cultural along with literary significance. It does not help in describing in details the person or the things to which it refers and it is referred to as the passing comment and the writer helps in expecting the different readers to possess the enough and required knowledge to spot allusion and grasp its importance in the text.

 Moreover, it is considered as the figure of speech which refers to the well-known event, story and the objects which will be beneficial in making the appropriate comparison in the minds of the readers. For example- Imagine a writer requires to explain the struggle of the main character which is against the overwhelming powerful kind of opponent. In such scenario, she wants to get across the respective idea that the character is righteous and it helps in standing chance of winning battle.

From the respective example, it can be identified that some of the allusions are as obvious as the example and the others are obscure in nature. Due to the story, event or the object which are being utilised in allusion, it can be helpful in carrying out the wide range of connotations and allusion sometimes helps in bringing the wealth of information along with attitudes. It is considered to be the brief as well as indirect reference to the person, thing, place or the overall idea of historical culture or the political significance. It does not describe the person or other aspects in detailed manner to which it refers.

For instance- The actual rise in the poverty will be unlocking the Pandora’s box of crimes, in the respective sentence, the allusion is to one of the Greek Mythology’s origin myth, which is considered as the Pandora’s box. The other example is the fact wherein the example is that the respective place looks like Garden of Eden and it is considered to be the biblical allusion to to Garden of God in book of Genesis.

From the different instances, it can be identified that in traditional Western Literature, allusions to figures in Bible and from Greek mythology are common and it can be utilised as the straightforward kind of device which will be beneficial in enhancing the text through providing further meaning to it and it can be utilised as well in more complex kind of sense or approach to make the proper ironic comments on one particular thing through comparing it to the other aspect which is dissimilar in nature.

In addition, allusion helps in sharing some of the features with, but it is required to be distinguished from, the different literary devices of the imitations and parody and it can be helpful in understanding the overall aspect of allusion in a proper manner. All the three requires reader along with author to share some content and amount of knowledge, however the intentions of the authors may differ.
