Assessing Special Needs of Jaz, an Intruder in a Beer Store - Case Study #1

Exploring Theories on Special Needs of Jaz

Case Study #1:

As a police officer, you have just responded to a call on a possible Break & Enter at the local Beer Store.  You and your partner have been there twice in the last month and not caught the person, yet the robbery is recorded on video.  You know from the video that the person is male and that he takes a case of beer but nothing else.  This time, you find an intruder, Jaz, sitting in the back room drinking beer and eating snacks.  In your questioning, you discover that Jaz lives on the street, as he was not able to follow the rules at home, dropped out of high school and has trouble keeping a job.  He says that he broke into the same Beer Store three times because someone told him to, and he wanted to get drunk.  Tonight, Jaz thought he would stay in the store as it was cold outside.  The more you question him, the more he changes his story and seems agitated and sad.  Your partner thinks that Jaz is lying to cover his tracks and that’s why he keeps changing his story.  Given our CJS training, you begin to wonder if there might be something more going on with Jaz.

NOT DIAGNOSING, ASSESSING

QUESTIONS:

1. What “theories” do you have about the special needs Jaz may be experiencing? In other words, what disorders or disabilities or challenges is he experiencing?  Be sure to answer BOTH a and b:

a. 1st Theory on Special Needs:  Identify AND explain, in detail, the FIRST “special needs” you believe Jaz may be experiencing, based on the lecture topics we have covered in this course. Be sure to fully develop your details of the special needs, so the depth of your understanding is apparent. This response should be a couple of paragraphs NOT a couple of sentences!

b. 2nd Theory on Special Needs:  Identify AND explain, in detail, a SECOND “special needs” that you believe Jaz may be experiencing, based on the lecture topics we have covered in this course. Be sure to fully develop your details of the special needs, so the depth of your understanding is apparent. This response should be a couple of paragraphs NOT a couple of sentences

2. What questions would you ask Jaz that could provide you with support for your theory on his Special Needs?  You are trying to “build your case” as to what you think might be contributing to Jaz’s behavior.  In that way, you need to ask him questions to “test your theory” about what is contributing to his behavior/attitude/actions, etc.  Be sure to answer BOTH a and b:

a. 1st Assessment Question connected to your 1st Theory:  List your FIRST assessment question you would ask Jaz in order to help support your theory about his FIRST special needs and explain why you believe this question would be helpful. Discuss how this question supports your theory from question #1a by showing where in the scenario you have found your “evidence”.  Phrase the question as if you are asking Jaz directly.  Remember that your question needs to encourage conversation and NOT produce just a yes or no response.  Be sure that your choice of question directly relates to your 1st “theory” about Jaz’s special needs (as you identified in question 1a).

2nd Assessment Question that supports your 2nd Theory:  List a SECOND assessment question you would ask Jaz in order to help support your theory about his SECOND special needs and explain why you believe this question would be helpful. Discuss how this question supports your theory from question #1b by showing where in the scenario you have found your “evidence”.  Phrase the question as if you are asking Jaz directly.  Remember that your question needs to encourage conversation and NOT just produce a yes or no response.  Be sure that your choice of question directly relates to your 2nd “theory” about Jaz’s special needs (as you identified in question 1b
