The course focuses on examining the two major aspects of drug abuse: addiction and the treatment of disorders. The course is meant to teach their students about the current issues in society related to drug use, such as the utilization of designer and performance-enhancing drugs. The topics to be taught for the course range from the social, cultural and historical impact of hallucinogenic drug use and knowledge about the practices in neurobiology and pharmacology for mitigating the arising problems of drug addiction and abuse

The course aims to provide ample information to the practising students allowing them to train on on-field cases, improving their abilities for managing major drug issues such as substance abuse and determining the right medication. There have been major shifts in the pharmaceutical market for advertising the products like antidepressants and prescribed pills directly to the customers even after being opposed by physicians. Thus, understanding the effects and the market for psychoactive medications and their impact on the non-informed audience determining best solutions to mitigate drug abuse is needed. Understanding the significant risks and issues common in society is needed, determining approaches to mitigate their impact and consequences. The course can be conducted online asynchronously and offline in classes. The students can actively participate in major course-related tasks and activities utilizing proper announcements, debates, discussions and emails. The students are provided with the core concepts of psychoactive drug use, adopting biopsychological approaches for prevention of the issues of drug abuse and lack of medication and treatments. The students are taught the various legal public policies that can be prevented and treated effectively with proper measures. The course helps the students with the simple classification of the drugs and their performances on the human system, analysis of complex drug behaviours, variabilities of drug reactions, and disjointed effects of using drugs. The weightage of the students is 140 in the CPSY607 Drugs and Human development course at the Toronto Metropolitan University.
