Description
Choose a pop cultural object: a song, music video, videogame, movie, book, artwork, episode of television, piece of clothing, etc. These can be chosen from a list of suggestions (see below), or they can be of your own choosing. Please see the section What Should I Choose? below for specific guidelines on what is and is not allowed for this assignment. While I want you to feel free to write about something that interests you, if you choose an inappropriate object you can receive zero on this assignment, so fair warning.
During the course we will discuss various theoretical and methodological approaches to critiquing popular culture. These posts are meant to be short critiques of your object that are casual (though still precise and rigorous) in tone. You do not need to specifically apply, say, a Marxist or Foucauldian lens to the material, but your critique should be precise, substantive, and be directed by the themes and approaches we cover in the classroom.
