CRIM 210 ON Fall 2020 Infographic Guidelines Your Infographic must be submitted to the Blackboard Assignments folder before 11:59pm on Sunday st November 1 . Make sure that your Infographic has your name and student number appearing somewhere on it before saving it as a PNG, JPEG, or PDF file. *If* and only if you are unable to save a copy of your Infographic without paying for it, your options are: • Take a screen shot and paste into word; • Provide a link to where your Infographic is displayed, if one is available; • Pay for it, if you want to retain a permanent copy of your finished product. Infographic Guidelines Using a free online infographic tool of your choice (e.g. Piktochart or Venngage), you need to create an approximately two page (plus references) visual representation of key facts related to a topic on youth crime or youth justice in Canada. Your infographic must at a minimum include the following: 1. A clearly identifiable topic and title a. Create a creative title that clearly identifies what your selected topic is. 2. A definition and description about your topic a. Infographics should provide a clear definition of the topic you are addressing. 3. Prevalence rates a. Infographics should provide relevant statistics about the topic, such as how often it occurs, recent trends, who it typically applies to/involves, and other key information, such as associated cost or possible penalties/outcomes. 4. Additional factual information a. Infographics provide research-based facts about a topic. Your infographic must provide a summary of the relevant research on your chosen topic, in a way that is easy to comprehend, relevant to Canadian youth, and supported by peer reviewed citations. 5. Graphics and visuals a. A good infographic should include a variety of graphics or images that visually present facts and statistics related to your topic. This can include things like clipart, the use of graphs, charts, or tables, or other eye-catching imagery. Consider using shapes (circles, rectangles, diamonds etc.) to frame key facts or pieces of information. You must provide a minimum of six recent and relevant facts about your topic which you have learned about through reading a minimum of five peer-reviewed sources (journal articles) that you have accessed through the UFV library. Do NOT provide weblinks as sources unless they are to reputable sources (e.g. Statistics Canada). Tips for • • • • • producing a strong infographic: Think of this as a brief overview that the general public could use to understand something about a type of youth crime or aspect of the Canadian youth justice system; Keep it short and simple – provide a concise summary of key facts and do so in your own writing (do NOT copy in phrasing from elsewhere, plagiarism still matters here!) Just like in a paper, make sure to provide citations that show where you got your information from – in an infographic, you can provide footnotes so as not to clutter the main presentation of information; Organize the material so that it flows logically and is cleanly presented – avoid clutter! Use graphics and images to convey key information and make sure to use an appropriate balance of colour – you want your infographic to be visually appealing and stimulating but not overwhelming. Picking an appropriate topic For this assignment, you must pick a topic that is relevant to this course and conduct appropriate research to develop your content, using recent and reliable peer reviewed sources (journal articles) accessed through UFV’s library databases. Please note that if your topic is not relevant to any of the following, your assignment will receive a failing grade: • Canadian youth crime (e.g. auto theft, sexual assault, homicide, break and enter); • Risk factors for Canadian youth crime (e.g. how issues like child abuse, foster care experiences, dropping out of school, adverse childhood experiences, substance use poverty etc. increase risk for crime); • Current issues facing Canadian youth (e.g. youth gangs, youth involvement in drug trafficking, cyberbullying victimization/perpetration, Indigenous youth, children or youth with incarcerated parents ); • Canadian youth justice system (e.g. police diversion of youth, youth crime prevention programs, intensive support and supervision programs, restorative justice). These are examples of some topics that you might be interested in looking at. The key is that the topic is relevant to Canada and focused on an aspect of youth crime/criminal justice.
