For this paper, you are asked to reflect on one of the following topics and make use of theories/perspectives addressed in this course in answering your research question. What is family and how is it important in today’s society? Or is it? Rising divorce rates, teen pregnancies and dysfunction – are we seeing the demise of the family? Yes or no and why or why not? In answering the questions, you will develop and advance a position (a thesis statement) that argues for a particular approach or viewpoint on the topic. The course has explored several sociologists and sociological concepts/theories/perspectives. In addressing the topic and question you have selected, identify a theory/concept/perspective that you believe best helps us to understand the topic and answer the questions. Remember that there are different (and often competing) explanations for these topics. Your goal is to persuade the reader that your position is the most complete or comprehensive explanation. This requires you to engage with the theory and apply it to the topic, not just summarize it. You are expected to develop and advance an argument/position on the topic that makes use of the theory/concept/perspective.
