ENGL-100 Reading and Composition
TOPIC: Write a personal essay in which you will describe/explain key events that led to an epiphany for you - a kind of moment of awakening if you like.
Think of a specific moment when you feel you changed or the way you looked at life changed. This could be the result of a specific event such as a move, the loss of a loved one, or meeting a particular person. Perhaps a profound revelation or interaction changed the way you see yourself and/or someone close to you or allowed you to see your parents or grandparent as “people” for the first time
Your thesis then should lay out the main point of your essay: what person and/or what experience helped to change you in a major way? In what way were you changed?
EXAMPLE THESIS: Although moving to a new community when I was thirteen was a traumatic experience, the move helped me to develop into a more confident, independent person than I was before.
In your body paragraphs, you will want to show your reader why this experience was traumatic, what you learned as a result, and how you think you changed. For example, if your point is that you became more confident and independent, demonstrate that this is so: examples and details are key. Keep in mind that you are trying to establish a kind of dialogue with your reader.
Pre-writing is an important part of the writing process. You will have to decide how to best proceed such as what events and characters will you include/omit? How much detail will you include? What about chronology? Remember to give yourself a chance to experiment and to explore. To avoid stifling your creativity at this early stage, try to relax!
