Media Analysis on Transgender People

Selection and Background

The major assignment for the course will be an in-depth content analysis on a media piece: this can be a current event news event of your choice, an advertisement, an episode of a TV show, a series of memes relating to a current event, a controversial YouTube video and its comments section, a series of Tumblr cartoons, a comparison between two different news sources discussing the same story, or anything else that provides you with content to unpack! The goal of your analysis will be to peel back the layers of your chosen piece and utilize the lenses of investigation explored in the course to discuss the content, intent, and potential effects of the media pieces in question, and the role these presentations of information could play in public perception and consumption of mass media. In your analysis, you are expected to apply with understanding a significant number of the following concepts that are central to this course. These include, but are not limited to: • Visual imagery: What’s being shown to the audience? • Language: What words are being used? • Time Given: Who’s given space to speak? In what order? • Context: What’s the social/historical/cultural context of the piece? • Power: What are the power dynamics? • Tone: What is the tone of the piece? Serious? Light hearted? Satire? Why? • Identities/Characters: Who is featured in the piece? How are they presented? • Audience: Who is the intended audience of the piece? • Source: Where was the media piece created? Who created it? How does that affect it? Your project should include three key sections: 1) Selection and Background: What is the piece? What is the relevant background information/context? How is it relevant in our current social environment? 2) Methods: How did you analyze the media piece? 3) Analysis: What did you find in your analysis? What do these patterns tell us about the messaging in the piece? How is this analysis connected to other academic findings? Remember: Though you must provide some background information on the media piece you are examining, this project is not simply a summary of the story itself as presented through different news pieces. You must critically engage with the topic and provide thoughtful analysis. You must also use existing scholarly literature to guide your analysis. In other words, this is not a simple opinion project. Avoid opinionated language such as “I think,” “I believe,” or “In my opinion”; you should make an argument, but you must use existing concepts, theories, and literature to build your argument upon. For this option, you will write a formal paper in proper essay structure (introduction, body/discussion, and concluding thoughts) to discuss your media analysis. The essay should be a minimum of 1,000 to 1,200 words in length, NOT including the cover page and references. You do not need to include an abstract. (Please note: Essays that fall significantly below the minimum word count (1,000) will be considered incomplete and will not be given a passing grade). i attached a photo that is my topic for this assignment and all assignment is about transgender people.
