What Is a Trade School? How Can You Apply?

A trade school is also referred to as a vocational school, technical school or vocational college is a post-secondary institution that’s designed to give students the technical skills to prepare them for a specific occupation. Examples of trade school include UEI, American Career College and Chamberlian University. Trade schools can be public or private, but many are a for-profit business. A trade school provides a degree in fields like information technology, nursing and health sciences, automotive technician training, and medical assisting. Program lengths vary, but typically, they can range from anywhere from eight months to two years. From trade school, one doesn’t graduate like in a college with a bachelors degree. Usually, upon completion of the program,  one receives a diploma or trade certificate acknowledging one has successfully finished. For some programs, one can earn an associate degree, which is a degree provided in a two-year college. After the completion of trade school, people usually get a job directly related to the field that they have studied in the vocational school program. Example, Once a student completes their dental assisting program, they can get a job as a dental assistant. If one completes a program in plumbing, one can get a position as a plumber. These trade schools prepare a person for a job in a specific field.

Trade school programs are the shortest; they run from less than a year to go to two years. As opposed to community colleges and four-year colleges, many vocational schools are for-profit businesses. The focus of trade schools is on giving students hands-on experience directly related to a specific job. At the end of the program, one can get a diploma or certificate, prepare for a licensing examination, or become an apprentice or journeyman in a skilled trade. Admission is mostly open enrollment: high school graduates or students 18 or older can attend. Socially there are more options for students at community colleges than there are for students at trade schools. However, there are fewer options compared to students at four-year colleges. Community colleges often have sports teams, clubs, and on-campus residents, but many community college students commute and are only at school for their classes. There is always an extra option available to the students of transferring from a two-year community college to a four-year college. These days many students start at a community college and then transfer to get a four-year college degree.

The most obvious benefit of going to a trade school is that trade schools require less time to complete. Almost all trade school programs can be finished in less than two years. Meanwhile, getting a degree usually takes at least four years to complete, and many students need a fifth or sixth year to get their degrees. Less time in school allows you to get more job experience and progress faster in your career. Furthermore, if one isn’t in school, they don’t have to pay for those additional years of college tuition and may have to take out fewer student loans. Another major advantage of a trade school is the hands-on preparation students will receive for a specific job. Additionally, there are lucrative jobs one can get with a trade school degree. And finally, if a candidate joins trade school, they need not stress about traditional college application program, because the application requirements are much less strict at a trade school.

Should people opt for Trade School or a Four-Year College:

Trade school vs College is a common debate among many potential students. It is estimated that 25 million new jobs are added to the workforce in the decade from 2010 to 2020. There could be 31 million more job openings during that time. And by 2020, 65 % of jobs will likely require some level of post-secondary education, ranging from certificates to bachelors degrees. These projections highlight the importance of education, and current studies on employment rates and earning levels highlight the benefits of education even further. Hence the education is a depending factor which makes both Trade School and Four-Year College an important factor.

Finding the Right Vocational School:

To decide whether a career school is right, whether there is a need for more training for the desired job, there is a need to look at the ads of positions that interest the person opting for the school. This is done to check whether the experience will be meaningful ar if a particular recommendation is found. Some businesses offer education programs through apprenticeships or on-the-job training.
