Question:

Write a expository essay that explains the following:

Topic: In his book, Born a Crime, how does Trevor Noah reveal his great love for his mother, her strength and survival skills, her devotion to her son, and her Xhosa cultural values and practices? Pick at least three themes/issues relevant to this topic to discuss in depth, and cite the most  illuminating examples from at least six different chapters in the book, providing lots of page citations. The six book chapters are not the same thing as the three or more issues/themes you will analyze in your paper; you are merely using data from at least six chapters (more chapters is fine, and looks better). Do not write a summary of six chapters from the book! Organize your essay around themes/issues, not chapters. You need to first read the book, then spend time reflecting on it, to figure out what three issues/themes you want to deal with. This assignment is an analysis of an assigned topic on Trevor Noah’s book, not a book report that summarizes what the books says. You are focusing on a research question and providing data from the book to bolster your argument. Summarize and paraphrase sections of the book in your own words, and complete your own synthesis and analysis.

Type of essay: This is an expository essay assignment. An expository essay “explains” something in a formal manner, using reason and logic, and bolsters the explanation with abundant data from the source, which in this case is Trevor Noah’s book. An expository essay does not use colloquial language. This essay does not call for you to “take a stand for or against,” express your “opinions” or “personal feelings,” or talk about your own experiences.
