This assignment is designed to explore your learning styles, identify specific skill areas to strengthen as you think about your career and discuss the expectations of Australian working conditions.

VAK Learning Theory

This paper discusses the various theories of learning and the impact that these theories have on our careers. There are a variety of theories that explain how the human mind is able to feed on new information and retain it for a long time. The VAK learning styles are discussed in this report. The best category of learning under this theory that describes me is identified and discussed in detail (Neil, & Chin, 2012). The characteristics of this learning styles are also described in this paper.A personal skills audit is also conducted and personal skills are ranked using this scale.The Australian laws on employer`s legal obligations and responsibility as well as support organizations for employees are discussed in this report.

The VAK learning styles uses the three main sensory receivers which are visual,auditory and kinesthetic(Movement). These sensory receivers are used to determine the dominant learning style of an individual. According to this theory,learners use all the three modalities to receive and learn new information and experiences. One of the three modalities that is most commonly applied by the learner is the learning style of that person (Walsh, 2011). This is despite the act that a person may use a different style for different tasks and in different situations.

According to the VAK theory,information should be presented to us using all the three styles. This is important since it allows the learners the opportunity to be more involved in learning irrespective of their learning styles.

It is important to explain the characteristics of each of the learning styles under the VAK theory. The following is an explanation of the learning styles and their respective characteristics:

For this learning style, learners mostly depend on the hearing senses to learn. The following are the characteristics of auditory learning style.

  • For learners in this category, they often talk to themselves. This means that learners may find it difficult to learn unless they read something out loud to themselves or the something is read out loud to them( Utley, 2011).
  • The learners in this category also find it easy listening to a colleague or a tape recorder rather than reading.
  • They talk while they write. For example during a seminar,I must talk and consult with a colleague next to me as I write whatever is being dictated.
  • They are easily distracted by noise.e.g I find it difficult to concentrate in a place where there is noise from machinery or even vehicles
  • They write lightly and not legible
  • They remember names but forget faces
  • They may seem to be listening to something inside them rather than to the person they are communicating with.

This refers to the people who obtain and retain information mainly by depending on the visual sense. This means that they depend mostly on what they sees rather than what they hear and feel. The following are the characteristics of visual learners;

  • They remember what was seen or read e.g when a person does not see an experiment of a chemical reaction,they may not remember it in class (Utley, 2011).
  • They do not retain what they hear for a long time e.g In class,I may hear a definition given by the teacher but I cannot repeat the same after twenty minutes but I find it easy to remember something when I read it
  • They may think in pictures or may think in words e.g I love illustration in form of pictures and diagrams rather compared to plain words
  • They may not understand information unless its written down or seen in any other form
  • Learners in this category remember faces but not names e.g a photo of a particular machine or animal will be remembered more when seen but the name of what was seen may not be remembered
  • Color is an important aspect in their learning. For example I love bright images and pictures since they last in my mind for a long period of time
  • They may be avid readers learners in this category also have vivid imaginations e.g a learner may think vividly when they see the photo of something and they may realize aspects that other people may fail to realize.

This learning style emphasize on people who learn by touching or feeling something. The following are the characteristics of learners in this category;

  • They remember what was done and not what was heard or seen.For example a person has to start a vehicle practically and not matter how many times you explain or illustrate to them they cannot learn.
  • Don’t hear things well
  • They learn by imitation or practice.e.g a person must shave in order for them to learn how to hold a shaving machine
  • Touches things to get a sense of them

From the analysis of the above three learning styles, I can be able to conclude that the best learning style for me is the visual learning style whose characteristics are discussed above.

  • The first responsibility is that employers must be an employee at least the minimum wage as indicated in law unless the employee receives tips or is not subject to minimum wage laws.
  • An employee must be provided with a statement showing the various deductions to their salaries and showing the met pay for the period.
  • When employment is being terminated employees should be notified at least 30days prior to the end of the employment.
  • Employees are also entitled to an annual payed leave under the Australian laws
  • Under the occupational Safety and Health Act(OSHA) employees should be provided with safe,secure and healthy working environment.

Employers have a moral responsibility to look out for the welfare of employees. One of these responsibilities is offering workers fair pay which matches their contribution to the organization. This should happen beside the minimum labor laws and the employer should be keen enough to compensate employees fairly.

Employers have a moral responsibility of ensuring employees are not psychologically affected in case the company decides to lay off some of them for one reason or another. The employer has a role of ensuring that the employees are able to move forward and secure another job with relative ease.

Employers should treat employees with respect and fairness (Pittard& Naughton, 2014). They should not show favoritism or dislike towards some employees. This aspect is important in ensuring that the employees remain highly motivated to perform well.

Employers should cater for the social welfare of employees and they should offer them support to help them overcome issues that may be affecting them both at work and outside workplace.

There are a variety of non-governmental organizations that protect the rights of employees working in various sectors in Australia. Some of the organizations that are responsible for protecting the rights of employees include;

Fair Work Commission-This is a tribunal formed by the labor department to advocate for the rights of employees.

Fair Work Ombudsman is another organization that advice employees and protects their rights. This organization is formed by the Australian Government to advocate for the workplace rights of employees and offer employees advice on their rights and responsibility of employees.

Workplace fairness-these organizations offers people whose workplace rights have been violated lawyers to represent them in court so that they can be able to get their rights.

Employees have a responsibility to act in the best interest of the employer at all times. All employees are expected to act I every situation in a manner that will result to maximum benefit to the employer and not in their own self interest.

Employees also have a moral duty to be honest to their employer at all times.This involves telling the truth about every action taken by the employee and even in the financial transactions (Schunk, 2013).

Employees are also expected to behave in a reasonable manner when negotiating for increase in salaries and other benefits and should not participate in unjustified industrial action.

Employees have a duty to carry out and follow orders of the employer so long as the orders are legal.

Employees also have an obligation to protect the property of employer. They should take reasonable care to ensure that the assets and equipment they use will be used in a good manner to safeguard them against loss or damage.

An employee should not start a business that competes directly with that of the employer while still working for the employer. This is because, if this happens, there is a very high likelihood that the employee may act in self interest and may cause failure of the business (Sappideen & Macken, 2011).

An employee should treat customers well in order to ensure that the business of the employer keeps expanding over time and hence contribute positively towards the interests of the employer.

Employees should contribute ideas that contribute towards the growth of the company.
