You have been asked to create a WHS induction tool focussing on hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control for new employees. You are required to explain how you can access WHS information and contribute to WHS compliance within your workplace.

Please keep in mind that you will be required to present this induction tool to new employees as part of Task 1 of Assessment Tool 3 – Practical Assessment and Competency Conversation (remember, it is recommended you use an organisation at which you already work as a reference, or use a simulated organisation, in the creation of this induction tool):

1. Explain the difference between a hazard and a risk within the workplace.
2. Outline the different sources of workplace hazards, risks and risk control information you might need to access and explain how each source contributes to WHS risk management.
3. Summarise ways in which you might access internal and external sources of WHS information, and explain why you might need to access them.
4. Identify the key legislation, regulations and codes of practice you might need to consider when performing a WHS role, and explain their relevance to WHS risk management.
5. Outline WHS hazard identification and risk assessment guidelines that can be utilised in the workplace, and explain how they can be used.
6. Define the WHS responsibilities for PCBUs and workers within the organisation.

 

Task 2 – Develop workplace hazard identification procedure and checklist

As part of the WHS induction tool, you are required to create a workplace hazard identification procedure for new employees. You must also create a Hazard Identification Checklist template, which you will use in Task 2 of Assessment Tool 3 – Practical Assessment and Competency Conversation.

The procedure must incorporate the dot points listed below, and remember, it is recommended you use an organisation at which you already work as a reference, or use a simulated organisation, in the creation of this induction tool:

1. Outline a range of common hazards that might be found within the organisation, including the harms they may cause and how these harms are caused.
2. Identify individuals or parties that might need to be advised of workplace hazards and the harms they might cause.
3. Outline the process that should be used for identifying hazards in the workplace, along with an explanation of any tools and techniques that can be utilised, in accordance with organisational requirements.
4. Create a Hazard Identification Checklist template that can be used within the organisation, in accordance with WHS legislation and organisational requirements.

Task 3 – Risk assessment reporting and risk control plans

As part of the WHS induction tool for new employees, you are required to outline the procedures used for assessing risks and determining risk control options within the workplace. You must also create a Risk Assessment Report template, which you will use in Task 2 of Assessment Tool 3 – Practical Assessment and Competency Conversation, and a Risk Control Plan template which is to be used in Task 3 of Assessment Tool 3 – Practical Assessment and Competency Conversation.

The procedures must incorporate the dot points listed below, and remember, it is recommended you use an organisation at which you already work as a reference, or use a simulated organisation, in the creation of this induction tool:

1. Outline the process that should be used for assessing risks in the workplace, along with an explanation of any tools and techniques that can be utilised, in accordance with organisational requirements.

3. Define the six (6) steps of the hierarchy of control and how it is applied to risk management.
4. Create a Risk Control Plan template that can be used by the organisation to minimise risks and record outcomes.
5. Outline ways in which you might evaluate implemented risk controls.
