Imperial Dairies Limited is apparently the best milk retailer in Kawanji area. This company has been in operation for almost ten years and is known for its quality delivery of its milk. The company management has even gone further to expand the operations beyond Kawanji area due to the great profit margins acquired over the years.
Many consumers have faith in the company and this has increased the demand beyond which the company can’t satisfy. Peter the manager and Sammy the head of packaging and a discrete idea to solve the inadequacy. They decided to dilute the milk with water to increase the volume and apparently has worked.
The company is recruiting a new sales manager since the previous one had resigned due to personal reasons. Coincidentally, Janey is looking for a similar post. She has been an icon in her field of sales hence qualified. Her ethical and loyalty background is outstanding.
After working for about three weeks, she was moved by the positive attitude of other employees, their efforts and loyalty to the company. She decided to give her all and apply her skills to work and even improve the ratings of Imperial Dairies Limited.
One day, she noticed that one of the employee was as adding water in the milk before it was processed. She became curious since she had a background knowledge in milk processing.
After pursuing the issue, she came to know that it was a decision by the management to increase supply due to the overwhelming growing demand for milk and its products in the area. He also explained how they evade from being noticed by other employees, customers and the national bureau of standards. He further pleaded with Janey not to report him for talking to her about it.
This issue troubled Janey and she could not even sleep that night. Here the main concern is; if she decides to abide, then she would be doing against her moral standards and ethical values. On top of that, she could lose her credibility as a sales manager if by any chance the issue come out to the public. The fines that she would be charged for condoning the act are extremely high. On the other hand if she decides to go against it, the employee that she talked to could lose his job, the company could be scandalized and lose its popularity together with its reputation and Jane being the sales manager could be charged with conspiracy and ruin her career as a sales manager. She decides to talk Sammy first.
Narrator: (This issue of adding water in the milk had stressed Janey overnight and she could not even sleep well. She decided to visit Sammy’s office early in the morning. This is her third week)
Janey: (As she enters the office after knocking) Good morning Mr. Sammy, how are you?
Sammy: (Smiling) I am fine thank you.
Janey: I am sorry for disturbing your morning. I can see you are a very busy man.
Sammy: (laughing) Yes, everyone needs to work hard as well to reach this company to greater heights. There are even plans to open our branches oversees if all goes well.
Janey: (In a low tone) about that, I think the goal will be hard to achieve if certain issues are not addressed.
Sammy: Which issues? I thought you have already adapted to our customs and schedules.
Janey: I can see you are very loyal to this company. You are fond of it yet…
Sammy: Yet what Janey? You are only three weeks old here yet have already started to be my judge. (Laughs sarcastically)
Janey: With all due respect, I think what you are doing with the milk is unethical and unfair to our customers.
Sammy: What is it that you know that I certainly don’t?
Janey: Sir, it is under your orders that the milk is being diluted with water to increase the quantity.
Sammy: How did you come to know of this?
Janey: That is unnecessary, you know too that this is very wrong. It can cause the company to be scandalized, we could lose our careers, the company we all love could fall, and we could get huge fines from the authorities and even lose all customers and never rise again.
Sammy: I can see that your moral values have blinded you. Open your eyes and see the glory that lies in discretion. The many jobs, your good salary, expansion and our resilience despite harsh business conditions.
Janey: (Angrily) I would like to speak to Mr. Peter then I will get back to you; that is, if at all I get to see you again.
Scene II: At Mr. Peter’s office
Peter: Morning Janey, what is wrong?
Janey: I would say that I’m fine but that would be a lie. I am just from Sammy’s office. It was intense there.
Peter: (Tensed) What was intense in Sammy’s office? Did he abuse you?
Janey: No Sammy hasn’t physically abused but may be ethically and morally.
Peter: (Surprised) What are you talking about? Kindly get to the point. I’m busy.
Janey: I know what you did after you expanded the company beyond its means to supply to the ever growing demand and you know it’s unethical and unprofessional.
(The first reason and rationalization of Peter suggesting that it is a conventional practice under such conditions and circumstances and the counter argument of Janey.)
Peter: I see that you have already found out. What we did is a normal measure under the circumstances.
Janey: Diluting the milk is unlawful, unethical and even against our code of conduct. We are supposed to be truthful to our esteemed customers not fooling them to meet our needs. Do you realize the consequences of such?
(The second reason and rationalism of Peter and counter argument of Janey.)
Peter: I think you are being overwhelmed by your new job. You are just performing the tasks within your responsibilities. Just relax and you will see the amazing results.
Janey: Sir, I am sorry but I cannot an issue such as this. It is clearly unethical and against our code of conduct.
(The first reason and rationalization)
Peter: (In a low note) I am sure that Sammy has explained everything. We took the measure the people under constant supply. Besides, you can see how we have grown.
Janey: I can see the growth but this has been at the expense of our loyal customers
(The second reason and rationalization)
Peter: Remember I am your boss and you should be loyal to me and the company. I will be responsible for my actions.
Janey: Have you given a thought about the repercussions of this if it comes to the public or government?
(The third reason and rationalism.)
Peter: No one needs to know. If it stays this way, everything will be fine. Besides, we are thinking of opening branches oversees if all goes well. Think of the number of people we are going to employ. Furthermore, imagine how your career and professionalism will come to a peak for being part and parcel of an excelling company. As long as they don’t find out it’s good for everyone.
Janey: With all due respect Sir, all these benefits sound nice and precious. However, they are all founded on a lie. Again I repeat, this is unethical and against what I stand for. What if there emerges healthy complications due to substandard milk and products? What if by any chance it leaks out to the public? Think about the fines you would pay. Think of what would happen to the company in case the bureau of standards finds out your actions. I think you have a lot to lose, not to forget your credibility as a manager and other jobs in the future.
(This is the final reason and rationalism with the most powerful counter-argument)
Scene III: At Janey’s home with Rick
Rick: Hey Janey.
Janey: I am fine thank you.
Rick: What is the matter my friend? You don’t call at this hour.
Janey: Sorry but I had to talk to you. There is unethical problem at my three moth old job.
Rick: I am listening.
Janey: I have realized that milk at the company is being diluted to increase supply. I’ve raised the issue to the manager but he is for it. I know it is not ethical and against my moral standards but I also need this job to support my life. I’m confused.
Rick: They can close down underperforming branches and increase the stock in the performing ones, they could bid for more milk or even start their own dairy farms, and also accept the law of nature; that sometimes inadequacy is unavoidable. They should not keep your ethics and moral stands on the line for selfish gains.
Janey: Thank you very much, I now know what to say to Peter tomorrow when we meet and see what solutions are viable.
Final scene: At Peter’s office the next morning
(The last rationalism of Peter regarding Janey’s argument on truth and fairness to customers)
Janey: I have thought about the issue and even consulted my friend.
Peter: I thought about the issue too. I don’t know where my ethical and ethical standards were. It is not good to benefit at the expense the customers. We should diversify our production to avoid such inconveniences. Thank you for opening my eyes and you should visit to discuss about your solutions.
Janey: (Relieved) Anytime Sir. I will see you in the evening.
