Bill Gates Career Development

Bill Gates is a known American entrepreneur, writer, and investor. He is one of the people who hold titles of the richest individuals in the world. Gates is a co-founder of the Microsoft Corporation which is a recognized brand in the computer industry, and almost all computers in the world have at least one product of Microsoft. He is hard working and does not give up on the things he does. He is, therefore, a true industry leader (Cuadros& Harrison, 2013).

Trait-factor theory of career development is one of the theories that best suits Gates career development. In this theory, personal traits of a person suit one in a specific occupation. The traits include one's attitude, interests, personalities, and values. An individual being able to understand oneself and knowing what will bring success to their side. Gate's father was a successful attorney, and most people expected him to follow the father's footsteps, but he came out on his own and knew that he had an interest in computers related things. With the support of his co-founder and friend Paul Allen, they figured out on making computers do interesting things and even became hackers (Robin, 2013). Despite his parents banning him from computer projects, he found a way of satisfying his interest even quit the university to pursue his interest. He was investigative which shows his interest and attitude towards computers.

Richard Branson Career Development

Richard Branson is an entrepreneur that launched Virgin Records that holds more than 200 companies in many countries. After the records, he came up with other ventures which include, Virgin Trains, Virgin Blue, Virgin Atlantic Airways and Virgin Mobile (Richard, 2014). He also owns Virgin Galactic which deals with space tourism which was funded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. This is a person that is not contented with one thing.

Developmental theory suits Branson's career development. This theory states that decision making is not abrupt but rather takes time thus an evolving process. In this theory, one anticipates implements and then is ready for adjustments. Branson started a record business in a church by running a student magazine, and it is where he advertised the Virgin Records, and from this many companies have emerged. He has lost some and sold out others like the mobile company. This anticipations and implementations have helped him to become famous and wealthy (Ruddick, 2009).

The theory career choice applies to Branson. According to this theory, career development is based on people’s behaviors, and they can be investigative, social, enterprising, realistic, conventional or artistic (McAdams, 2010). Branson has been able to come up with so many companies because of his ambitious behavior as he said you look for something out of frustration. During his trip to Puerto Rico, his flight was canceled, and because of his innovative behavior, he decided to have his plane and offer rides to stranded passengers for a small fee (Richard, 2012). This act clearly brings him out to be a creative person.


My Career Development

The theories I would apply to my career are trait factor and the theory career choice. According to the trait-factor theory, one has to have self-understanding and, therefore, choose a career that fit their skill and interest to bring success to oneself and the community. Just like Bill Gates, I would like to work on a job that best fits my interest and skills to get successful (Hooley et al., 2013).

The theory career choice also applies to me. This theory was developed by John Holland, and it widely applies to the career life of many people. According to this theory, career development is based on my behaviors. The personality of people can be investigative, social, enterprising, realistic, conventional or artistic (McAdams, 2010). The occupation is, therefore, determined by the characteristics and the qualities of an individual. This is important because it will give me a sense of self-satisfaction in my career. This theory will also give me a career that is suitable to give me an enjoyment when carrying out my career tasks rather than performing duties that I feel like being forced to do.

Personal Values of Bill Gates and Richard Branson

Personal values are the core principles and beliefs that one may use as guidance in their lives. Friendships in life are one of the things I value most as good relations with friends can help one go far. Another value I have is being creative, hardworking and curious at the same time. I would like to know what I can always do to bring success to my career. Personal growth is a value that I love most in me as I always like to gain new knowledge (Arnold, 2016).

I admire Bill Gates because he always wants to be at the top and not a loser which is one the values I also pose, his Microsoft system is dominant in the market. He is a hardworking person. This is evident from what he said that rest is considered a sign of being weak. He is talented; one of the values I do not have as he can recognize the best, he said he doesn’t hire fools and therefore looks for the best (Lesinski, 2008).

On the other hand, Richard Branson is characterized by a personal value of service. He wants other people to benefit from his services. He has come up with so many brands like the Virgin Airways was started to help people payless and get where they wish (Garside, 2013). This is a trait I do not have, but I admire it just to work to help others out. Branson was creative by advertising his records on a newspaper, and this made him known.


In conclusion, career development is determined by different theories. Making a decision to settle on one thing can be hard but can bear fruits if done correctly. People have certain theories that guide them in one way or another to be successful in life.  Also, the personal values one exhibits assist them much in achieving their goals and desires.
