Key challenges that construction project manager's face

The paper mainly reflects on the key challenges that are faced by the project managers of construction industry in UK. According to Hwang and Ng (2013), there are number of challenges that are faced by the construction managers and it is identified that some of the challenges mainly occur due to direct result of construction operation whereas some of the challenges arise due to various type of indirect activities. Some of the issues that are generally faced by the construction workforce include workforce consideration, time constraints, safety as well as the nature of work.

In this assignment, the challenges that the project managers faces in managing construction project are elaborated. The paper also discusses the structure of team members that will be helpful in making a contemporary construction project successful.

In the UK construction industry, the project managers face number of challenges as well as issues in managing the project. It is identified that sometimes the challenges occur due to direct construction operations and sometimes it arises due to indirect activities. The challenges of the construction industry must be managed by the project managers in order to achieve success (Walker 2015). It is very much significant for the construction project manager to understand the various types of demanding realities that occur in the planning as well as controlling phase of the project. The challenges that are faced by the construction project manager include nature of work, safety, time constraints, work force consideration, inadequate planning, inflexibility as well as uncontrolled growth.

Construction is mainly dependent on various skills as well as knowledge of people in planning as well as in execution of the work. Therefore, it is quite important to have talented management in place for guiding as well as directing various types of operations. It is identified that the announcement related with the Britain’s intention to leave the EU does not have a great impact on the construction of 2016 but the negotiations will affect the construction industry in the coming future (Eadie et al. 2013).  It is identified that the business of construction generally relies on skilled people. If the business does not allow draw skilled people from EU, the UK will lose large percentage of their workforce. Therefore, the Construction industry of UK must consider the various types of alternatives if the skilled people from overseas are not allowed.

It is found that the weakening pound in UK will affect the construction industry in some way. It is identified that from the time of Brexit vote, sterling has generally fallen by 13%, which increases the prices of the importing materials. These have affected the construction industry generally, as various types of raw materials that are required for construction are brought from overseas. The costs of materials are at the highest point from last five years. The chances of downturn are more when UK officially leaves the EU. The construction industry needs to execute various types of project very carefully by analyzing the cost of importing raw materials.

Evaluate team structures that will make a contemporary construction project manager successful

Safety is considered as one of the ongoing concern for the project managers of UK. Construction is found to be inherently dangerous as it has higher degree of risk. The toll that is related with construction accident is quite high in context to both cost as well as human suffering. Accidents help in adding appropriate burden of needless as well as unavoidable cost. Construction accidents generally help in adding $10 million annually to the construction cost in UK. It is identified that inadequate planning also creates number of challenges before the project managers. For understanding the reasons of failure of any project, it is quite important to understand the cash issues as well as labor (Bryde, Broquetas and Volm 2013). The cash flow must not overestimate or underestimate the capabilities but it must be capable of mapping out various details of all the projects. Due to improper planning, the project managers face number of challenges that include poor estimation, improper scope control, obstruction in completion of project and more.

Delivering the project on time as well as on budget is considered as one of the greatest challenge in the construction industry of UK. It is identified that delays in project crates number of problems before the project managers. The construction project are generally delayed due to overhead costs as well as due to cash flow problems that generally helps in playing significant limits on the ability as well as bonding capability of work (Alzahrani and Emsley 2013). Improper time management creates problems that are more serious for the project managers and in the future only, less company will agree to work.   If the team members of the organization are not responsible enough to maintain the objectives as well as goals of the organization, then the project manager of the construction project must helps in providing appropriate leadership in order to keep the entire project on track (Goh et al. 2014). They also face the problem due to lack of accountability, as the members of the organization are not able to manage the activities of the project properly.

It is identified that both productivity as well as maintenance of equipment can be able to make or break the successful delivery of the project. It is found that the success of the construction site project also decreases due to theft of construction site equipment. This is because thefts of various types of equipment are costly, as machinery is expensive; it takes much time to replace. The competition in the construction industry of UK leads to shrinkage of the profit margins thus it helps in constraining the essential reinvestment in various technology as well as business practices, It is identified that stagnant construction labor generally helps in compounding the entire problem (Tran et al. 2014). The productivity of the construction industry is stagnant for more than 50 years, which is most important challenge before the project managers as the main task of the managers of the project is to make the project successful as well as profitable.

According to Turner (2016), construction in UK is considered as one of the complex array of various interdependent activities that generally helps in creating organized chaos. The different nature of construction project generally helps in introducing number of challenges before the project managers. The project managers of UK construction face problems in progressing with the project due to changes in the weather. Changes in the condition of the weather create obstruction in the development of those activities of the project that is weather sensitive. It is identified that the nature of work is generally changing and it include retrofit, restoration as well as rehabilitation (RRR). It generally helps introducing greater risk into the entire procedure.  These risks are generally limited to non-existent built information, marinating various types of facilities of construction and different types of difficulties associated with construction (Bohari et al. 2016). Damages that generally occur due to interruption of services like communication can be costly. It is very much important for the project managers to maintain as well as preserve the environment appropriately during construction of the project.

The workforce within the construction industry of UK is steadily aging and as a result, the sector is losing skilled individuals. The main problem is that the young people cannot replace the old ones (Cardoso et al. 2017).  The industry is failing, as they are unable to promote career within the construction industry properly. In order to resolve the problem it is quite important to meet with young people and have to reflect before them the benefits of working with the construction industry. This can be achieved by working more close to schools, colleges as well as universities.

Construction project in UK generally involves large number of people for making the entire project successful. The structure as well as composition of the project team generally helps in changing the entire duration of the project. It is identified that some of the project team members in UK generally have very much brief involvement in the project that generally helps in brining proper knowledge within a specific phase of the project like client, lead consultant as well as project managers.

It is quite important to have proper structure of the project to select team and in order to have proper structure of team members it is very much necessary to provide the project with appropriate prospect of success. It is identified that all the members of the project team belongs to the project board and the activities of the project board are generally managed by the board of directors. The project board generally engages in the owner of the construction project by providing appropriate direction as well as management for the project for making proper decisions including commitment of resources (Walker 2015). The project board of UK  construction industry generally comprises of various independent client advisers, project sponsors, user panels as well as champions. The client advisers generally helps in evaluating the exposure of the client and also engages in analyzing as well as determining appropriate services for improving the entire construction procedure. They also manage communication with the client for evaluating all quotes (Turner 2016). It is identified that project sponsor plays a great role in the project as they mainly concerned with ensuring that the project helps in delivering proper benefits that is related with the business. They mainly act as an arbitrator for making appropriate decisions on the behalf of project manager.

The project manager of the construction industry of UK generally works under the project sponsor. It is identified that project is a person that generally engages in initiation, planning, designing, execution, monitoring as well as controlling. They also help in completing the entire project within the assumed budget as well as time. The project manager mainly consists of lead consultant as well as contractor. A contractor is a person who mainly engages in construction work for managing the project (Sharif, Kamaruzzaman and Pitt 2014).They are mainly responsible for covering oversight of the entire construction site, management of trade and vendors as well as communication of information for completing the entire construction project. On the other hand, consultants are the individual who mainly engages in meetings for determining the various requirements of the construction project (Wang 2015). They also work with different clients of the project for defining the various scope of the project, planning timescales, for clarifying various specification of the system.

The contractor mainly consists of sub contractors as well as suppliers. The sub contractor generally engages in business that generally signs a contract for performing various obligations of the contract. The person is mainly hired in order to perform a particular task as a part of the entire project and the person is mainly paid for the services (Brady and Davies 2014). However, suppliers are the person who mainly involve in offers, sells, and supplies or distributes goods related with construction. The main responsibilities of the supplier of UK are to deliver various types of services that are specified within the contract (Koh and Rowlinson 2014). The lead consultant of the project mainly consists of lead designer, design team as well as other consultant. The lead designer is an individual within an organization who generally involves in preparing as well as modifying various types of construction related designs and then arrange them properly. They help in providing various types of designs based on which construction is done. It s identified that the led designer generally helps in providing instruction to the designer team and the team generally performs as per the instruction (Alreshidi, Mourshed and Rezgui 2016). The other consultant as if cost consultant, specialist consultant and CDM consultant are also presents in order to perform various tasks.

The CDM consultant of UK construction industry is present for advising as well as assisting with the duties of the client in order to engage as well as appoint appropriate competent. They also engage in identifying as well as collecting pre-construction information and generally provide them in a convenient way to the designers as well as other contractors. It is identified that specialist consultant generally engages in resolving or mitigating challenges that are associated with the construction of the project (Creasy and Anantatmula 2013). The cost consultants are also present within the project team for providing proper estimation, advising regarding various types of construction work. It is analyzed that they generally helps in determining the requirement of thee client by undertaking various types of feasibility studies. They also engages in checking designs for meeting legal as well as various types legal and quality standards.

The composition of the entire project team generally changes through the entire duration of the project and therefore they generally include members that must be outlined properly. The roles as well as responsibilities of the project team members are elaborated within the appointment documents and are communicated appropriately to various other project team members (He et al. 2015). Additionally, the project team in UK construction industry can accepts different types of risks that help in delivering various types of project, which is defined as well as understood properly by the project team members. It is analyzed that the matrix of roles as well as responsibilities generally helps in identifying the roles that are needed to complete the entire project properly. An assessment is generally undertaken in order to identify that whether resources exist within the various organization or any new appointment is required (Wang 2015).  With appropriate development of the project, a responsibility assignment matrix is mainly created that further helps in setting various detail about the tasks that are generally assigned to various individuals.

With the help of proper team structure, the organization can utilize both resources as well as the talent of the management properly that further helps in achieving success within the organization (Alreshidi, Mourshed and Rezgui 2016).  It is identified that a sound structure of the organization in UK generally helps utilizing the present resources appropriately by mitigating the risks in order to achieve success. The structure of the team also helps in reflecting weak spots as well as deficiencies within the management and therefore the problems can be resolved easily

Conclusion
