Professional Expectations for Nursing Practice

The following website may assist with this question

https://www.acwa.org.au/

Professional practice as a community worker requires a sound understanding of what professionalism means, the expectations of consumers, employers, the profession and society in general.

Examine a policy as a part of your research and its associated professional expectations. Consider how this policy will impact on your practice and professional growth as a community worker.

For doing this question, I am acting as a community worker and understanding professional expectation on nursing practice. This will act as a support by providing right guidance to all those health workers, who might either be ignorant or intentionally prone to serious risk that have adverse effects on their health.  who aren’t provided the needed care and are vulnerable to health risks (ACWA, 2022).  In order to do this, it is important for community health nurses to possess some of the basic qualities that show higher commitment towards social inclusion, social justice and acts as moral requirement for this professional. Apart from this, it is even important for an individual to respect other co-workers, which is essential element for nursing practice. This will act as a support to promote the health of their client, community as well as other health professionals.

For doing this Mental Health act, 2016 policy has been taken that will aid me to improve as well as maintain the well-being of all those who are suffering from any kind of mental illness (Queensland Government, 2022). It is of prime importance to alleviate an individual’s mental illness to prevent him from harming other members in the community. This policy will be aid me to grab favorable opportunities to care many people. Thereby, making me one of the caring persons as well as on the professional front make be highly responsible to take care of those person who are in need. Further, my role would to just to provide advice to aid him the right approach that will acts a support the person as well as the entire community to either avoid or minimize the exposure to specific health risks as they are generally ignorant about it.

Goal setting is an important method of:

  • Deciding what is important for you to achieve in your career / life
  • Separating what is important for you from what is irrelevant and staying focussed on what is important to you
  • Motivating yourself to achievement
  • Building your self-confidence based on measured achievement of goals

Set specific measurable goals. If you achieve all conditions of a measurable goal, then you can be confident and comfortable in its achievement. If you consistently fail to meet a measurable goal, then you can adjust it or analyse the reason for failure and take appropriate action to improve skills.

Clearly define the criteria in your mind for success or achievement of the goal. There should be definable limits on your goals so you know whether or not you have achieved it.

This is very important. You should take care to set goals over which you have as much control as possible - there is nothing as dispiriting as failing to achieve a personal goal for reasons beyond your control such failure to gain a particular rotation, rostering issues,  injury, or just plain bad luck. Goals based on outcomes are extremely vulnerable to failure because of things beyond your control.

If you base your goals on personal performance or skills or knowledge to be acquired, then you can keep control over the achievement of your goals and draw satisfaction from them. For example, you might set yourself a goal of caring for a person with a tracheostomy, but the opportunity to do so does not arise. If you had set your goal to gain more knowledge and skill in the care of a person with a tracheostomy tube, you have more control over what is possible from research and clinical skills sessions, and can draw satisfaction and self-confidence from its achievement.

Goals may be set unrealistically high for the following reasons:

  • Other people: Other people can set unrealistic goals for you, based on what they want. Often this will be done in ignorance of your goals, desires and ambitions.
  • Insufficient information: If you do not have a clear, realistic understanding of the skills and knowledge to be mastered, it is difficult to set effective and realistic goals.
  • Always expecting your best performance and
  • Lack of respect for self: If you do not respect your right to rest, relaxation and pleasure in life then you risk burnout.

Timelines will place limits on how long you are willing to persist along a particular path, and provide the opportunity to reassess either the goal itself, or the steps you have outlined to achieve the goal.

Setting goals at the correct level is a skill that is acquired by practice.

You should set goals so that they are slightly out of your immediate grasp, but not so far that there is no hope of achieving them: no-one will put serious effort into achieving a goal that they believe is unrealistic. Personal factors such as tiredness, other commitments and the need for rest, etc. should be taken into account when goals are set.

When you are thinking about how to achieve goals, asking the following questions can help you to focus on the sub-goals that lead to their achievement:

  • What skills do I need to achieve this?
  • What information and knowledge do I need?
  • What help, assistance, or collaboration do I need?
  • What resources do I need?
  • What can block progress?
  • Am I making any assumptions?

Is there a better way of doing things?

Discuss a professional goal that you have and discuss the steps that are needed to achieve your goal.

To get placed in one of the top nursing community service centres within the next two years is one of my career aspirations.

1. Pursuing few courses on nursing to improve my skills and knowledge in regards to quality care, within three months.

Impact of Mental Health Act 2016 Policy on Nursing Practice

What support networks may you require to reach your goal? Where are they available?

I will require the support of various stakeholders to accomplish my goal. These stakeholders include support from my teachers, researching for courses, using techniques that provide practical application of the health-care skills to increase my chances to get hired in community services, seeking advised for experienced professional. As I have already completed by education, it is not possible to take direct support of educational institute. Still, I can take support of the alumni and teachers to get engaged with them through Social Networking websites like LinkedIn. Adding to this, most importantly, I need to enroll in the institution that offers placement opportunity that too from well reputed health care community services.  Although, I understand that it will be quite difficult for me to land in my dream company, but will do everything possible to fulfil my aspirations at the earliest.

What further training or specialist advice do you need to reach your goal?

The skills that I need to possess to achieve my goal includes being well directed by constantly engaging in practices that allows me to get closer to my desires. This can be done by expanding and continually enhances my skills mainly related to quality care and leadership. This will be beneficial for me to have a fair idea on how these skills can be applied practically. In addition to this, it is essential for me to engage with my teachers and experienced professionals through LinkedIn as it would enable me to follow the right approach like courses to enroll for, workshop to attend and activities to undertake that aids me to do my own research for developing in depth understanding of health-related knowledge (Cooper, Smith, & Russeel, 2017). This is necessary for enhancing my knowledge for my professional development as a whole and not just for the sake of getting job.

With the increasing emphasis on efficiency and effectiveness in health care, how community workers manage their time is an important consideration. Time management is recognized as an important component of work performance and professional practice. Discuss the strategies you will use to develop your time management skills.

Time management is very important for every industry. It is a necessity requirement for the nurses. With excessive pressure by way of emergency shifts, it would be difficult for nurses to maintain work life balance. As, it is one of the rewarding carriers, it is critical to strategize in order to keep up with the demanding profession.

Some of these strategies can be discussed below:

Setting Achievable and realistic goals. For doing this, it is important to take good care of people that you know by developing a habit of noting done be well informed about important details that is helpful in providing proper care to the patients. This requires people who are very supportive. Adding to this, I will create smaller goals and monitor my performance at each level. Thereby, ensuring I am able to increase my efficiency in managing my valuable time (Mir, 2021).

Implement Reutilization: This will ensure that I am able to implement systematic process for doing my routine task. Thereby, being consistent with managing my time.

Accounting for distraction; This will enable to know the particular reason that caused be me to be distracted from the work that I was supposed to do. This will enable me to get better at handling the situation, when it arises in the future.

Procrastination. As a community worker, it is essential for me to get thoroughly trained to never engage in procrastination. The main reason for this is, it only adds problems in managing time. Like, if I am over burden during a particular period then instead of engaging in practices that delays my work, I will delegate my work to the remaining team players.

Self-care is imperative to personal health, sustenance to continue to care for others, and professional growth. Describe how you would care for yourself to ensure that you are able to continue to care for others? Examples may include exercise, relaxation classes, reading, art classes

It is very much essential to indulge in Self-care practices in order to arrive in a position to care for others and see my personal improvement. (Blum, 2014)

One of the major approaches which I will utilize is to prioritize my personal health in order to be in a position to prioritize health of others. Like, I need to avoid every kind of activities that have negative effect on my health. This can include avoiding alcohol, eating a well-balanced diet. Apart from this, I will engage actively, in physical and mental exercise that can comprise of walking, running, or any kind of outdoor games for more than an hour on a regular basis.

As, I am less talkative I am more involved in listening to Others. That has aided me to get engaged in active listening of other’s viewpoints. For doing this, I will ensure that I am able to get its better understanding of the knowledge gained. Although, it sometimes gets difficult for me to concentrate for a longer time, but I will learn by practice. For being effective in this, I will set time limits and take shorter breaks.

How would you identify personal and professional development opportunities and options?

The Following Steps will be taken to identify Personal and Professional development Opportunities:

How can you ensure that you operate within legal and ethical considerations for reviewing and improving own practice, including:

  • Codes of practice
  • Duty of care
  • Rights and responsibilities of workers and employers
  • Work role boundaries – responsibilities and limitations

Steps that can be taken for ensuring legal and ethical considerations are reviewed for improving one’s own understanding are listed below:

· It is important to be well informed with the workplace health and safety practices.

· It is even crucial for me to be aware about the code of ethics as it will enable me to comply with all the guidelines

· It even ensures that I comply with all the safety standards that are associated to OSHA.

· It confirms that I take immediate action that I believe is dangerous for life for myself or Others

Reflective practice enables community workers to develop their skills, increase their knowledge, and deal with emotionally challenging situations. Discuss how you will develop reflective practice, including feedback from supervisors and colleagues.

Reflective Practice will be performed using following steps:

· Have a detailed understanding of the present situation. This basically means that I need to have the sufficient knowledge of the specific time frame and Outcome that is to be received.

· Become aware of One’s own emotional state, due to arrive at the specific situation. This will enable one to have the detailed knowledge of one’s emotional status to respond accordingly.

· The following step will be to examine the reasoning behind the arrival of the specific situation. With the help of supervisors, I will be able to investigate and   develop an understanding why the things happened the way it did.

· I will also introspect on different ways to do the same work. For doing this, I will approach my supervisors and colleagues to get feedback for proceeding towards the right direction to overcome the challenges that has arisen. While doing this, it is important for me to think critically, how these changes can influence my health practices.

The ability to give and receive constructive feedback is crucial to the success of any professional workplace relationship. Think about a time when you were given feedback at your workplace and answer the below questions:

How involved did you feel in the feedback process?  Did you self-assess your own skills before being given feedback?  Did you understand the feedback given to you?  What did you learn about yourself and your skills as a result of the feedback?

One’s ability to give as well as receive constructive feedback is important to gain success in workplace that deals with any kind of profession (NCVO, 2022). I have detailed the feedback that was given when I was a student nurse. This has been detailed below:

The very first time, when I was given feedback is when I had pursued community assessment under the counselling of my supervisor. I really didn’t expect that I will receive such overwhelming and I was deeply moved by it. Although, the feedback received felt as a false compliment, but it aided me in identifying the good qualities that I haven’t realized yet. This enabled me to understand that I can work well by being associated with the community.

Did you make any changes to your practice following the feedback?  If yes, what was it about the way the feedback was delivered that enabled you to change your practice?  If no, why was this?

It was very surprising for me that majority of content provided as a result of feedback stated that I performed quite well throughout my health practice. However, there was one aspect in the feedback that was negative. This can be elaborated as at times I get nervous when addressing sensitive and emergency situations. I accepted that this was right and decided to change my approach while dealing with similar situation in the future.

Discuss how you would seek support and specialist advice for further training.

I will keep in touch with my trainers and supervisors to solve the doubt instantly as and when they arise, specifically when I come across sensitive situations. Adding to this, I will even be engaged in reading and be updated about recent happening to be in a better position to equip myself.

What support networks, internal and external, are available to health professionals within the health sector?  List support networks that you may contact if required.

Goal Setting for Health Workers

· Community Workers

· Trainer

· American Nurse Association

· Clients

· Family Medical Network ( (Kamlin, 2022).

Continuous professional development (CPD) is defined as “the means by which members of the professions maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge, expertise and competence, and develop the personal and professional qualities required throughout their professional lives”. In health sector you are required to obtain 20 hours per year of CPD.

How will you reflect on your practice to inform your continuous professional development? Where and how can you find access and review information on current and emerging industry developments to improve and inform evidence-based practice? How will you plan your continuous professional development?

I will reflect upon my practices by analyzing what all have changed, since I decided to continually be involved in developing my professions. I believe that as I move forward in my profession, self-observation would prove very useful for reflecting my CPD. I would assess myself and take note of my strengths and limitations to ensure that even with professional development, I have been grounded. Moreover, I would also continuously gain new knowledge so that I am able to change the way I do and perceive things. This process will be achieved by identifying what all has been achieved in the entire process. For doing this, I will use all resources that are accessible through e-library. For example, by referring through different health journal will enable to understanding which particular age group are being presently are facing health issues in my community. I would take training courses and many other qualifications for my continuous professional development. Through the help of the external teachers, I would gain theoretical knowledge while becoming more grounded and work-oriented.

The professional development plan is a personal guide for your CPD activities. The learning plan provides a structured way for you to develop learning objectives based on the learning needs you identified following assessment of your practice and to identify and complete learning activities to address the needs you identified.

The first step in the planning process is to have a clear picture of your career goals. This includes self-reflection and career exploration to help you identify the career path that will bring you the most job satisfaction. Once you’ve identified your career interest, you can identify the related knowledge, skills, and competencies you need to develop in order to reach your career goal.

Once you have identified the knowledge, skills, and competencies required of your career goal, you will need to assess your current competency in those areas. You may want to review past performance appraisals and feedback you have received from your supervisor or others. Do not focus just on the areas in which you are less skilled, and remember that strengths can also continue to be developed.

The next step is to create the Personal Development Plan. The Completing the Individual Development Plan Resource Guide (see page 2 of this Guide) provides the step-by-step process for creating the Personal Development Plan. Once you’ve created your plan, you need to share it with your supervisor and possibly a mentor. You should lead the conversation about your development goals as you are the ultimate owner of your own development, however the plan should be mutually agreed upon by you and your supervisor and possibly a mentor.

Once your plan is in place, it is time to get busy completing the learning activities by the timeframes you have identified. Individual development often involves changing behaviours in addition to learning new ones. Research suggests that desired change is more likely to be successful when:

  • The desired competency is specifically defined
  • There is commitment and motivation to the behaviour change
  • An action plan is shared with others
  • Other people support your behaviour change
  • The behavioural outcomes are visible and can be measured

Use your calendar to highlight timeframes and schedule time with yourself each week to carry out the learning activities in your plan; a minimum of 30 minutes a week is recommended. Address barriers as they arise and make adjustments to the plan as necessary – remember, this is your individual development plan.

Finally, you need to receive feedback on your progress and evaluate your success in meeting your development milestones. Set follow-up meetings with your supervisor and possibly a mentor. The duration and frequency will depend on specific needs but as a general guideline, a 30 minute meeting every three months is recommended.

The learning objective and outcome should be relevant to your work outcome as community worker

1. Provide evidence for the goals that you have completed. The evidence you submit will greatly vary depending on the goals you have set for yourself. Evidence may include but are not limited to:

  • Certificate or a statement of attainment or other similar documentation
  • Proof of attendance for events you have attended
  • Meeting minutes
  • Letter of acknowledgement
  • Email correspondence
  • Screenshot of online forums that you have participated in
  • Other similar documents

Important: Your evidence must clearly align with the personal development plan and must clearly show that you have been able to achieve your goals within one month, as set in the plan.

2. Submit your evidence along with this completed workbook. Specifically, the evidence you submit must:

  • Be relevant to the goals in your plan
  • Be reflective of the criteria or indicator of success set for each goal
  • Show they have been accomplished within the set timeframes
  • Indicate dates that coincide with those in your updated Personal Development Plan submission.
