Growing Concerns: Illegal Dumping and Hazardous Waste

Who doesn’t want to live in clean, green areas and drive through uncongested streets with no issues of parking?  Well, Canterbury area citizens can only dream of those streets, and the reason is the issue of illegal dumping and the lack of parking lots. The subject is a growing concern for both residents and Council.

The issue of illegal dumping of rubbish has often been highlighted. It is not just an eyesore but a safety hazard as well. It seems that the problem is likely to remain a constant issue if it is not sorted out. The Canterbury area is now well famed as the notorious dumping location as it is becoming a routine habit of people coming in the middle of the night to dump their rubbish. The rubbish can comprise of anything, from the regular household waste to construction waste.

With piles of illegally dumped rubbish cleared up in recently, it won’t be long before the rubbish gets piled on. It is indeed a disgusting site to see rubbish pile get longer and higher. As Ms. Jundi said “It just kept getting bigger and bigger. It was disgusting.”

Illegally dumped rubbish is creating a massive response from emergency services and council as the rubbish pile contains asbestos. The material was dumped right in the middle of the street just for convenience and in the middle of the night. The rubbish pile carryings asbestos certainly doesn’t belong here. Moreover, asbestos-contaminated waste would need special equipment and appropriate methods to undertake this kind of work.

Police are already appealing to remains proactive and watch out for the illegal dumpers of waste in the Canterbury area. According to one of the residents, setting up cameras on the site can certainly curb the problem and deter the rubbish dumpers. As he said” “I think that a series of warnings and several CCTV cameras along the length of Koala Rd will deter rubbish dumping.”

What is needed here is a zero-tolerance approach towards illegal dumping. Strict laws should be enforced regarding illegal dumping and any person who breaks the law should be fined heavily. Photographs and videos can be used to catch the offenders.  Illegal dumping has a lot to do with people being lazy, and they need to be fined. The company can face a fine that can go up to$4000. The penalties and fines in court settlements can even go higher, depending on the type and the volume of the waste material.

Zero-tolerance approach towards Illegal Dumping

While the CCTV surveillance cameras can do their bit, the local residents too can watch out for those offenders and can photograph or record any suspicious activity in the area.Any illegally dumping activity can be reported at Regional Illegal Dumping Squad hotline on 131 555. On the the-spot fines of $4000 are executed right away.

Australian infrastructure needs a boost what with the ever rising population, the growing number of vehicles and the rising issue of parking. With more people living in the cities and more of them commuting by car, it is no surprise to see the parking problem taking a serious turn. As the city corridors and streets get filled up with more cars, travel times would increase, and the parking lots will get more congested.

Well, what is the use of driving in a city where there is no parking space and its streets are overflowing with vehicles? The solution lies in creating an improved parking solution that can not only lower the congestion but also free up more parking space. The parking rates are getting higher and the parking hours are getting shorter.

The traffic congestion and parking issues are not just a headache for the commuters but also for the government. Infrastructure Australia has already warned that Australia would face around $50 billion by2031 just because of congestion in Sydney.

Partnerships and new technologies are working towards affordable and convenient parking for people who can look and book for short-term parking through their smartphone and mobile access technology. A parking app developed by Ford spots open parking spaces in the city and shares the information with car drivers looking for parking. The driver-assisted sensors make it easier for the driver to locate a parking spot and navigate to the parking lot straight away.

The building managers and commercial property owners must ensure that the parking spaces are not under-utilized. It is essential to improve the booking and marketing platform so as to lower the admin costs and improve the experience while makes the parking easy. DriveMyCar, a car rental service, offers an innovative solution. The company owner states how the car rental service is not the traditional car rental company “We are an online peer-to-peer marketplace connecting car owners looking to earn some extra money by renting out their car, with drivers who are no longer prepared to pay high car rental costs and want more choice.” (White, 2015).DriveMyCar draws attention to thousands of under-utilized cars as well as parking areas in Australia. Majority of households have two cars, and they can always rent out cars. DriveMyCar is already becoming popular and is a pointer than the model would work.  The company doesn’t own cars but is just tapping on the thousands of cars around Australia that lie unused.

New Technologies and Partnerships for Parking Solutions

While all those efforts and innovations do offer some hope, they still do not address the issue of growing number of vehicles on the road and the parking problems. Australia's infrastructure needs a major overhaul to fix the transport and parking problems. Improved public transport in the capital cities can take off the load on the congested roads and lower the need for parking lots. It is essential to manage the peak period passenger loads by increasing the capacity for parking infrastructure in all capital cities.

Community feedback for Lakemba Station highlights the issues of high rise development that will only increase traffic. Larger street trees and streetscape improvements with more shopping options can benefit the street. Infrastructure improvements should be considered. The critical points in Council feedback include funding of the local infrastructure, meeting the needs of the population increase and creating more open spaces and parking spaces to support the proposed densities. Better networks between open space and the smaller spaces are proposed.

There are growing concerns about creating areas for growth and community facilities with the provision of utility infrastructure. The proposals for areas for supporting increased densities of population and vehicles are a growing concern. Council’s officers are concerned about the growing pile of rubbish and traffic on the roads. The Council wants the residents to live in clean and green streets. The Regional Illegal Dumping (RID) Squad works across the area to spy on dumpers and motivate the residents to find and report dumpers. There are fines of up to $4000 and $8000. Council looks after the roads and footpaths and ensures the maintenance with the regular repair. It requests the public to report any dumped illegally rubbish on the roads and public area. The Canterbury council encourages the residents to report illegal dumping activity and prevent the activity of illegal dumping become a routine.  A revised strategy and growing awareness is a must to tackle the concern. The council needs to keep in mind not just the current situation but the scenarios in the coming years as well.

The ongoing issue of illegal dumping and parking across Canterbury-Bankstown will not go away unless and until the residents join hands with the local authorities.
