Management accounting traditionally focuses on supporting managers to enhance shareholder and other customer value. Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the business environment. Sustainability requires businesses to consider the impacts of their activities on society, the economy and the environment, not just in shareholders and customers. This has led organisations to increasingly measure, track and report their sustainability performance.
Identify two organisations operating within Australia who are providing sustainability reports.
For each of these organisations examine the sustainability report, and respond to the following questions:
A discussion of whether the sustainability report conforms to a recognised framework, such as GRI, or Integrated Reporting. Identify and briefly explain the Framework
A discussion of whether the organisation has an Environmental Management System in place (eg one credentialed to ISO14000).
Identify three environmental or social Performance Indicators that the organisation refers to in its sustainability report.
Comment on whether targets have been set for each of these Performance Indicators. Have these targets been met?
Based on the above questions, provide a critique on the effectiveness of the sustainability reporting in both organisations.
