The paper will be looking at the Catholic Social Services in Australia and its role in providing human services to the members of the society.

Catholic Social Services which is located in Favier House, Australia is one of the organizations that take care of the needy in the society. The organization falls under the social policy domain of practice and accommodates several fields of practice namely the disability field, and working with older adults (Jiang et al. 2017). The organization is aimed at making sure that the policies which are in place meet the needs of the needy Australians and if they do not, it champions for the need for them to be looked into and changed. The organization is supported by the Catholic Church, and it has two types of employees; the volunteers and the employees on the payroll.

A social worker has the role of making sure that people or rather the members of the society are helped to overcome the challenges they might be going through. A social worker is a person who deals with people at an individual, group, and family level (Grinnell et al. 2016). The main aim is to listen to the problems that people might be going through, analyze them and with the knowledge gained, intervene and try to offer solutions that are likely to deal with the problems. To sum it up, the social worker is a professional who goes to far ends to meet the needs of the needy in the society (Turner, 2017).

The Role of the Human Service Professional

A social worker must know how to deal with people with issues that need the attention of others. The reason behind it is that social workers are people who are mandated to helping the needy ones in the society and for this reason; they must know the best way to do so (Narey, 2014). A social worker must have excellent communication and decision-making skills. Communication skills come in handy because the social worker must communicate with the clients and the decision-making skills help the social worker to come up with the best decisions to help the clients (Shea, 2016). It is essential for the social workers to be educated and this makes sure that they are equipped with essential knowledge that helps them to be effective service providers (Netting et al. 2016). The knowledge comes along with different skills, and it also brings out the best of the social workers thus making them of great help to the needy members of the society.

Working with a diverse clientele is a challenge that most of the social workers have to face every day they are offering services to their clients. The knowledge of the background of the client is essential while dealing with a diverse clientele. It is imperative to note that a social worker is supposed to be competent and of help to the clients (Travis et al. 2015). However, this cannot happen if the social worker does not know anything about the background of the clientele. The social worker must also know about the communication techniques that are used by the client (Yegidis et al. 2017). A social worker is a person who is continuously engaged in the processes of making the lives of the community members better. Therefore, it means that communication is a critical aspect that might hinder the service user from benefiting from the social worker (Wagaman et al. 2015). Knowing the basics of communication puts the two parties in a good position to share information.

The moral values of a social worker should not be compromised at any given point. It is imperative to note that dealing with a diverse clientele is not a simple task. When one fails to uphold the moral values, he or she might end up providing services that are not in line with the desires of the client. Some of the values that are essential are service to humanity, integrity, and respect (Garbarino, 2017). When the social worker is respectful, despite the challenges that they might face getting along with a diverse clientele, he or she will always maintains the lane of respect, and that avoids reactions that might make the condition of the service user worse. Service to humanity value helps the service provider to remember that despite the background of the client, he or she is a human who should be treated right. The integrity value helps the service provider to demonstrate all honesty in the process of giving services. It helps one to remember that all clients should be treated and helped with equal measures.

The Knowledge and Skills Needed


Some of the skills that are essential when it comes to dealing with a diverse clientele are communication, understanding, conflict resolution, adaptability, decision-making, and the ability to work under pressure (Gleeson, 2018). Communication is a skill that is inevitable because, in the process of offering services, the service giver and the service user must interact. With this in mind, it is apparent that if one does not have the communication skills, dealing with a clientele that is diverse might turn out to be one of the biggest challenges.

Understanding is an essential skill when dealing with people from a different background. The reason behind it is because these are people who have different beliefs and sometimes reaching an agreement or helping them might prove to be a challenge. The skill of understanding helps one to accommodate the diverse beliefs and contributions of the diverse clientele thus making the process of service delivery smoother and effective (Garbarino, 2017). When dealing with a diverse clientele, conflicts might be available; it is important for the service provider to have the skills of conflict resolution. Having the skills makes it easier for the service provider to deal with conflicts and to make sure that there are no conflicts that stand in the way of providing services to the clients. Adaptability is a skill that makes the service provider to fit in the environment perfectly. A social worker is supposed to fit in the environment so that the clients can have confidence in him or her.

The skills of decision making are essential because a decision that fits the situation at hand must be made. Having the skills puts the service provider in the best position to come up with the most suitable decision in any given scenario (Garbarino, 2017). The skill of working under pressure is one of the most significant skills. The skill helps a service provider to be in the best position to deliver service even when there is too much pressure. Working in a diverse environment means that one is supposed to handle a lot of challenges and most of them amount to pressure (Pintor et al. 2016). Therefore, a need to have a skill that enables one to work under pressure comes in handy.

Unconscious bias is one of the ethical dilemmas that the social workers are likely to face when dealing with diverse clientele. Unconscious biases are perceptions that one has towards something or people which are influenced by the environment or the background of the caregiver (Barry, 2016). A good example of the biases can be associated with dealing with a homeless person who is in his right state of mind and physically strong. To some extent, one can be discouraged from helping the person bec ause of the perception that a healthy person should work to own property and to meet other needs (Howe, 2017). In such a case, the service providers might be faced with a challenge of whether to help the person or help another one who is disabled.

Knowledge, Values, and Skills That Support Working With a Diverse Clientele

Another ethical dilemma while dealing with a diverse clientele is associated with the moral beliefs of the service user and the social worker. In this case, a good example can be taken from a Catholic social worker and a non-religious person who wants to have an abortion (Barry, 2016). According to the beliefs of the Catholics, it is not morally right to have an abortion. Therefore, it might prove to be a challenge for a person who seeks abortion advice from a Catholic social worker.

Just like many other professions, in social work, there are professional codes of ethics that are supposed to guide the professionals in the field. The code of ethics revolves around five significant principles and values which are supposed to remind the social workers of their responsibility to their potential clients (Shapiro, 2017). The principles and values are;

  1. Human dignity and worth

When it comes to value, the code of ethics states that all human beings are entitled to their well-being because the life of a human being is valuable. In this respect, the principles that ought to guide the social workers are submission to the established United Nations human rights, non-discrimination, enhancing the dignity of the service beneficiary, and protecting the service users (Illinois Institute of Technology, 2011). A human being should be protected at all cost, and his or her life should be valued, and that can be only be demonstrated by providing services which do not undermine the dignity of the service users.

  1. Social justice

Social justice entails the aspect of treating all people equally without considering their backgrounds when making critical decisions. In social work, the service givers are mandated to provide services to a diverse clientele meaning that differences among the clientele are inevitable. In this respect, the need to equitably distribute resources and offer services comes in handy.

  1. Service to humanity
