Significance of the Research

Discuss about the Construction and Demolition Wastes Recycling.

Construction and demolition wastes have received a lot of attention in the recent past. Mostly the construction and demolition wastes are seen as a lens to understanding the potential for the resources efficiency and improvement in the construction industry. Workshop, construction and demolition activities are the major sources of wastes in many parts of the world. There is need for construction and demolition materials to be recycled, some of the materials, which can be readily recycled, include, glass, plastic, wood, concrete among others. Lots of benefits have been attributed to recycling of construction and demolition wastes as they have greatly contributed to environmental conservation and preservation of natural resources. Developing a framework for improvement of recycling of construction and demolition wastes can greatly boost the efforts, which are put in place to recycle construction, workshop and demolition wastes, which contributes to the pollution of the environment (Cabral, 2010).

The research mainly highlights the various waste materials that are related to the construction sites. Apart from that, the different methods established to ensure proper handling of the waste material has been established. The importance of ensuring that waste material is properly managed is also discussed. Different practices will ensure appropriate management of wastes in the society. The methods include dealing with the attitude of the stakeholders in the construction site. Different recycling methods target achieving the appropriate waste management levels. The practices have been highlighted adequately through the paper. The paper goes further on telling on the safety of the different methods of handling the wastes. It, therefore, gave a hierarchy of techniques that can be used in the management of wastes ensuring minimal adverse effects in the society. The statistics are needed to tell the progress of the working and help in setting better strategies (Dolan, 2016). There is abundant information on the statistics relating to waste data. Hence, offering room for better decision making at the end of the research. The tools to be used in carrying out the study have been described properly, and each person will be in a position to use them efficiently. Hence, any person using the report has the ability to foster proper waste management in the society (Goel, 2016).

The aim of carrying out this research was to develop a framework on how to improve recycling practices of construction and demolition wastes.

The Hierarchy for Wastes Related to Construction

The following research objectives were set to help in achieving the aims of research. The research objectives were as follows:

  • To critically analyse the current status of waste generating from construction and demolition waste
  • To identify the practices followed in recycling waste
  • To analyse the advantages and barriers of recycling building material waste
  • To identify strategies for recycling construction and demolition waste

The findings from this research will be very significant in the efforts which are being put in the environmental conservations. From the research there are many benefits which are associated with the recycling of construction and demolition wastes Alireza et al (2017). The research will be of great significance to the various parties in the construction industries. Recycling of construction and demolition wastes can greatly reduce the construction costs.

There is a need to understand the diverse information regarding the construction waste materials. One will have to understand the waste management practices that have been embraced in the construction sites. There will too be the need to attain a deep understanding regarding the various recycling methods adopted in the society that help in the recycling of construction materials. Understanding such processes will help one establish the appropriate measures that will facilitate effective collection of construction waste materials and adequately recycling them to ensure that they benefit the society (Hendriks, 2011).

The construction industry forms one of the primary sectors that consume significant amounts of resources in the society. As a result of the high consumption being experienced by the industry, it also serves as a significant cause of the pollution being experienced in the nation. However, there is a need for the reduction of the waste pollution in the society (Lauritzen, 2012). Hence, there was the coming up of the waste hierarchy. The hierarchy sets clear the needed priorities regarding sustainability. The figure below shows the hierarchy of wastes in construction and demolition (Limbachiya, 2014).

The construction industry results in the production of different types of wastes. Such wastes act as a nuisance in the society, however; there is a need for coming up with various methods that can significantly help in making such residues beneficial in the society. The process can be achieved through the recycling method. There are several benefits associated with such a technique that greatly help in making the construction process an efficient process (Pacheco-Torgal, 2016). The disposal costs, an essential section of the construction process are highly reduced allowing for less finance to be used in carrying out the construction process. Carbon emissions are too a significant problem facing the construction industry. The emissions interfere with the health of comfort living of many in the society. Recycling the wastes plays a substantial role in ensuring the reduction of such emissions in the nation). There are too several legislations related to the environment and restrictions that have to be followed. The recycling process plays a significant role ensuring that such legislation is achieved in the construction site enhancing a better performance of the society. Several materials undergo the recycling process in the construction site. Moreover, they are recycled in different ways

Practices Followed in the Recycling of Building a Waste

Builders, teams of construction, as well as design practitioners have the ability to divert construction as well as demolition materials from disposal though buying used as well as recycled products. Practicing source minimization, preserving the existing structures, and salvaging the existing materials are also included in it. Proper designing of the building in order to support adoption of the used materials, reuse, as well as disassembly can minimize waste that is to be experienced at the construction sites. Such practice provides room for economic as well as environmental analysis regarding the waste materials and how proper control can be realized Simon et al (2016).

The strategies for using the designing adaptability, disassembly, as well as reuse, consist of the following things.

  • Development of adoption or making disassembly plan with the help of key information materials, structural properties along with repairing access and contact information need to be achieved (Tam C. M., 2013).
  • Making use of the simple open-span structural systems along with modular building element assemblies Miguel et al (2013)
  • Using durable materials that after making use of them and there is a need for re-using, they will still maintain their worth.
  • Reducing the use of distinctive types of materials along with developing a connection that is visible and accessible
  • Utilization of mechanical fasteners like bolts, screws, as well as nails, can greatly help in sealants as well as adhesives.
  • Planning for movement as well as the safety of the workers to allow for adapting of a safe building, repair, as well as disassembly Sylvain et al (2015).

Every research call for having set strategies that will help in the collection of data. Hence, there will be need for the Selection of the methods and the methodological tools. They will be useful for conduction of the research in proper way. Below are the selections of methodological tools to frame effective research methodology for the research.

Various parties are involved in construction and demolition of various engineering projects will be interviewed to give their views on how the recycling of the various wastes that are obtained from construction be improved. The questions that were used during the interview were clear, focused and encouraged open-ended response which greatly made the interview process to be very successful.

In the process of research a number of existing records and documents were reviewed to identify the challenges which the recycling of construction and demolition wastes faces. Databases of various construction and engineering companies were reviewed to get the true picture on how the recycling of construction and demolition wastes can be improved. From the databases, it was possible to access some of the meeting minutes that were carried out regarding recycling of construction and demolition wastes.

This involves the study of various construction and civil engineering projects which have adopted the culture of recycling the construction and demolition. Try to adopt the strategies they have put in place to ensure the overall process of recycling of construction and demolition wastes.

The research proposed is intended on utilizing literature reviews and use of interviews, literature review and case study investigations as a suitable system to carry out the research. Interviews, case studies and literature review encourages a researcher to keenly examine the information relating to a particular setting that is a specific topic of research. Additionally, literature review which is usually referred to as secondary sources allows a researcher to pick up top to bottom information and illustrate the aspects of a proposed research topic

Conclusion

In conclusion, Demolition waste is attained after the process of pulling down infrastructure project. The wrecked structure has reinforced concrete, bricks, plasters, cardboards, and timber sections from agglomeration. It is referred to as demolition waste in the particular case. In addition to that, construction waste is surplus from unwanted materials resulting from the completion of construction activity. Recycling and reusing of solid waste materials should be highly embraced in the society. The incineration and use of landfill sites can also be used as a method of the disposal of the waste. However, they have detrimental effects on the society that makes them least preferred means of disposing of the waste material (Winkler, 2014). Hence, most governmental institutions went to the extent of discouraging such a means of waste disposal
