The Importance of Maintaining Inpatient Schedules

The proper transition from being an inpatient at a mental health hospital to settling back into the community can have a successful foundation for a lifetime. However, if there is no proper support for this transition then it can leave the patient in a dangerous situation and can have negative effects which can range from mental illness issues and also risks of patient suicide. According to the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention, the death rate for the patients who live in psychiatric care is 300 times more than the General population in the first week of getting discharged from the hospital. It is extremely important to maintain the inpatient schedules so that the patient can leave the least disruptive life outside of the community (Bray, 2021). It is also important to promote patient engagement so that the patient is involved in the communication and decisions of the treatment which is being made. It is also important to prioritise aftercare within the first seven days after getting discharged from the mental health institute or hospital. It is also important to emphasise meaningful emotional and mental connections because strong human connections are integral to a healthy life. Is extremely important to cultivate and maintain healthy relationships with family and also with people who helped in the mental institution. These tips can help in the healthy transition of a person having a hospital based treatment to return to the outside world of the hospital.

Trauma is often seen in an exaggerated way or in a very simplified way. The big forms of trauma generally encompass large-scale shocking events such as living through a war or a natural disaster. Small incidents of trauma include more daily life events such as the stress of work, parenting struggles, racial discrimination or even the loss of a pet. Even so, the aspect of trauma is a very complex issue and every single traumatic event no matter how bigger of a scale or smaller it is has the potential to negatively affect the mental health of an individual (Bray, 2021). It is extremely important for the therapist as well as the client to recognise and address every single kind of trauma even if it is trivial to them. The daily, or the everyday trauma also has to be given an equal amount of importance as the bigger trauma in life. The little daily trauma can manifest into grief and loss, anxiety, attachment issues as well as panic attacks along with self-esteem struggles. It can lead to high amounts of mental health problems if they are not taken care of. Therefore, it is extremely important to mindfully assess the trauma of future clients and give importance to the little daily life trauma and stresses that they are having because these little stresses need to be addressed. If the daily life traumas and normalised amount of stresses are not taken care of then they can manifest into dangerous mental health issues ( Bray, 2021).

Grief is a very unavoidable and unique part of human life.   an individual is forced to experience grief through the loss of a loved one or loss of anything that are dear to them at some point in their life. A counsellor or therapist is always trained on grief and the different strategies that they can use to empower the clients. Sometimes it so happens that all the training and experience dissipates in certain situations. Grief and loss or a very human emotion and they can become personal even for therapists. Even when there are proper therapeutic boundaries that are upheld, it is not unusual or unethical for a counsellor to grieve with the client or for the client’s death (Smith,2021). Counsellors can often have emotional bonds with their clients because therapeutic relationships are a form of a relationship. These different feelings of a counsellor can develop over time and they are not unethical but it is a natural process between two humans where there is an honest sharing of feelings. If a therapist is grieving the loss of the client, then that is how they validate and respect the experience of loss and brief of the client (Smith,2021).

Promoting Patient Engagement in Treatment Decisions

Prescription stimulants which include Methylphenidate compounds have been approved by the US Food and drug administration for the treatment of ADHD. The misuse of prescription stimulants is typically defined as taking stimulants without a proper prescription and this has become a serious problem in the United States as well as abroad.  The misuse of description stimulants is considered as cheating by college students who study for exams and write papers (Glatter, 2022). According to a study that was presented in the periodic academic societies, there were 20% of students in the Ivy League colleges reported the misuse of prescription stimulants while studying and there was one-third of the students did not believe this as cheating (Aikins, 2019). The present study which was evaluated and showed the prevalence of medication misuse has evaluated responses from 600 college students. From here there was 18% of students admitted to misusing a prescription stimulant for an academic purpose and 24% of the students use these medications at least more than eight times. Misuse of prescription stimulants is considered to be cheating because it can lead to medical complications which can include anxiety as well as withdrawal in those who do not have any ADHD. There needs to be proper awareness of the fact that the misuse of medication can cause severe health issues (Glatter, 2022).

Social media has become an extremely important feature in the lives of several individuals who face daily challenges with mental health. Social media generally refers to all mobile and internet platforms that can allow individuals to connect with other people through virtual networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat. These social media websites help people to share and create as well as exchange several forms of digital content and information. Individuals who live with a range of mental disorders which include anxiety, depression or psychotic disorders use social media platforms in order to have self-validation (Naslund et al, 2020). They return to social media in order to anonymously share their personal experiences and seek help with their mental health treatment and options. The one thing that is harmful to individuals who depend on social media to diagnose mental illness is the fact that the diagnosis could be wrong. Individuals who self-identified as having schizophrenia or any other disorders such as ADHD had reported that visiting social media was one of the most common actions when they use digital devices (Phillips, 2022). They have self-diagnosed themselves which is very harmful because it is without proper professional help. It is extremely important to understand what is driving the client in order to have unexpected world-views and distorted world-views because of social media. It is very important for the therapist to become candid with them and make them understand step-by-step the harms which can be caused if they depend on social media (Bray, 2020).

Clients communicate extremely vulnerable aspects about themselves but non-verbally and verbally in counselling sessions. This can overwhelm counsellors who do not organise their information properly. The strength that I will have as a counsellor would be to completely understand the client’s situation and the symptoms as it has matched the symptoms with the diagnosis. This diagnosis can help in the treatment planning and asking the right questions during the treatment planning can help in mapping out the treatment properly. And councillors who were busy with the full amount of clients might be hesitant to the idea of creating time for an integrative plan (Bray, 2021). But the main strength in treatment planning would be to dedicate some time to having an integrated plan for each client. If the counsellor practises having this plan, in the future, they would not have to write a detailed case conceptualisations plan for every single client. The three different components of assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning are linked together and they provide a blueprint for all the counsellors so that they can provide evidence-based treatment. These are extremely important responsibilities and practising the skills is very important for every counsellor. Some of the strengths that I might have as a condition when it comes to assessment diagnosis and treatment is that I will plan a comprehensive integrated map for each and every client so that the diagnosis is authentic and correct. One challenge that is present for every client and counsellor is proper communication of the symptoms and honesty. Many professional counsellors can have mixed feelings about the diagnosis and this can be a huge challenge to pinpoint the correct treatment for the client. It is extremely important to be completely transparent with the clients and include them in the planning of the diagnosis so that there is an honest interaction and there is no doubt about the treatment plan in the long run.
