History & Location of the place:
In the ambit of Langkawi almost 99 tropical islands are situated along with the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Langkawi Island is almost 30 km from Kuala Perlis and 51 km from Kuala Kedah. Main island of Langkawi is Pulau Langkawi. These islands are mainly famous for myths which are fascinating and legends. These islands include number of stories such as a giant and an eagle, warrior and princess of the sky, war and love story, and myths are based on legend of island that is Mahsuri white-bled women.
UNESCO gives award of Geopark to Langkawi because of its geological beauty and heritage which includes beautiful landscapes, limestone caves, sea arches, a pile of hay, stone remains of glaciers and fossils. These heritages are almost 500 years old. On these Islands there are some rock formations which are unique and still confuse the mind of people. This place is for those who want to relax their mind and want break from noise and hustle bustle of city. Many nature based activities are conducted there and other activities to relax on the beach. This Island is more than beauty and nature because it has many legends and also interesting history which have many mysteries. It has many stories of legends such as wronged maidens and lovelorn princes and they leaves the mark of prosperity on Islands. The most famous legend is a beautiful maiden known as Mahsuri, who lived in this Island almost 200 years ago. This lady was accused for committing adultery and sentenced to death. This accusation was wrong and put by the haters of the lady. When she was stabbed her body oozed white blood because she was proclaiming her innocence. She cursed this Island for seven generations that this Island was remains barren, and the remainder of this wrong maiden is Mahsuri's Masoleum.
In 1821, Siamese attacked on Langkawi, and because of the inevitable fate Datuk Kerma Jaya who was the head of the Kampung Raja, which was the ancient capital of Langkawi. King ordered to burn the granary of the village and poisoned all the wells of the village for the purpose of make the enemy starve. After that this island was slipped into slumber and this legend was considered as allure of Langwaki (Mother earth travel, n.d.).
After the seven generations the slumberous existence ended of this Island and people realize that curse of Mahsuri was ended, nobody knows whether it is superstition or coincidence. Modernization was conducted and this land was developed very carefully.
In 1987, Langwaki was declared as duty free port by the Federal Government, and during the period of 1990 the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) was established for the purpose of developing this Island as tourist destination. LADA was housed in LADA Complex, and it is also responsible to improve the socio economic conditions of local people.
Malaysia decided to launch MEASAT I into the orbit of the earth on 13th January 1996. Government choose island of Langkawi for the purpose of settling down the control centre of MEASAT Satellite for monitor and control all the in-orbit operations related to MEASAT Satellite. The centre was set up at Gunung Raya which is highest peak of this Island, and this operation brought the name of Langwaki on the world map.
Today this Island is developed and blossomed by inhabited farmers and fisherman, and it also become the world class tourist destination for both domestic and international travelers. The main town of Langkawi Island is Kuah which was sleepy hollow at one time is now becomes the commercial district.
