In the era of digital technology, the term “digital literacy” is indicative of the particular ability to teach, learn, evaluate, utilize, create as well as share literary content with the utilization of information technologies and internet. In the education premise of 21st century, education has highly become digital technology oriented as varied uses of digital technologies have made the procedure of teaching and learning easier, joyful and attractive. According to Mohammadyari and Singh (2015), literacy means the basic ability to read as well as write and the phrase “digital literacy” means accomplishment of the ability with the help of digital technologies in the classroom. In other words, digital literacy and education means a procedure to earn literacy with the help of digital technologies in order to perform varied tasks efficiently in a digital environment.
However, in the era of digital literacy learning to program computers can successfully bring insights to both the teachers and the students. Nowadays not only the teachers but also the educational policy makers are desiring to learn computing a mandatory criteria for the students. Most specifically, it has been identified that most of teachers and educational policy makers are focusing on the aspect of “computational thinking”, which is supposed to be a convenient transferable method of solving as well as exploring varied new situations (theguardian.com 2017). Further, it is to denote that it is significant to learn about program computers as well as the fundamental principles of the computer science; students earn the ability to accomplish unique insights regarding numerous mathematical aspects like algorithm, algebra, abstraction and many more.
On other hand, according to several peers of education field, digital literacy should be given utmost priority as it has the potentiality to play a key role in the educational curriculum. Furthermore, as per Mohammadyari and Singh (2015), alongside digital literacy, in the educational curriculum there is the need to add varied social norms and risks related to the utilization of internet and online responsibilities in the curriculum in mandatory basis. It is essential to keep in mind that in terms of digital literacy, students should not be only given classes to learn digital skills in only computer application and special computer science classes and should be given as compulsory educational aspect to the students (huffingtonpost.com 2017). Digital literacy therefore needs to be considered as a fourth pillar of modern day education. On the other side, there is the necessity to protect children from the excessive utilization of internet through legal requirements, which should be responsibly maintained by peers and educators.
Nevertheless, it has been recently identified that most of the young teachers are being hired without having adequate amount of skills in digital technology and specifically in computer skills. Consequently, the standard of primary and secondary learning outcomes is decreasing. Recently, the NSW education minister – Rob stokes has urged for bringing serious improvements in the teaching courses of all the academic institutions of NSW. It is highly significant to keep in mind that the parents of the students should also be cautious about whether their children are acquiring proper computing skills from their peers or not (smh.com.au 2017). Therefore, it can be contemplated that the in the contemporary era of digitalization, digital literacy has become an essential ingredient of education.
