## Question:

Responses for questions 1, 2, and 3 below must each be written up in 3 sections, using the headings:

Aim (approximately 30 words)

#### Question 1 ESTIMATING AREA 15% out of 45%

A local council surveyor is part of an environmental impact assessment team investigating possible residential development of two areas of land. The surveyor must determine if the two areas, Site 1 and Site 2, which run along existing creeks and roads, are the same surface area.

Calculate the approximate area of each site in square kilometres and compare the two areas.

#### Steps to help answer this question

• A large uneven area can be calculated by breaking it up into smaller shapes (use no more than six shapes per site).
• Use the map scales to calculate actual areas.
• Determine the best way to make a comparison of the two areas.

#### Useful information

• The two maps have scales 1: 40 000, which means that 1 cm on the map equals 40 000 cm in real life.
• Use measurement devices e.g. ruler, string, dividers to measure parts of the area as displayed on the map
• Use (when and where necessary) the following formulas for the areas of different shapes;
