Justification for the chosen articles:

From the search on NCBI database, using the keywords and filters stated above, 27 results were shown, which included studies on children and adults. From these studies, the studies done on children were excluded, and 18 studies were selected, which fulfilled the entire search criterion.

To further streamline the studies, additional filter was added.

Text Availability: Free Full Text and Full Text

This filter was added to ensure that I get full access the article. This resulted in 9 Results.

  1. Prospective randomized controlled study on the effects of Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745 and amoxicillin-clavulanate or the combination on the gut microbiota of healthy volunteers.
  2. Setting up a clinical trial in care homes: challenges encountered and recommendations for future research practice.
  3. Commercially available probiotic drinks containing Lactobacillus casei DN-114001 reduce antibiotic-associated diarrhea.
  4. A high-dose preparation of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria in the prevention of antibiotic-associated and Clostridium difficile diarrhoea in older people admitted to hospital: a multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel arm trial (PLACIDE).
  5. Lactobacilli and bifidobacteria in the prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea and Clostridium difficile diarrhoea in older inpatients (PLACIDE): a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre trial.
  6. Probiotic VSL#3 prevents antibiotic-associated diarrhoea in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial.
  7. A multicentre randomised controlled trial evaluating lactobacilli and bifidobacteria in the prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea in older people admitted to hospital: the PLACIDE study protocol.
  8. The effect of Lactobacillus casei and Bifidobacterium breve on antibiotic-associated diarrhea treatment: randomized double-blind clinical trial.
  9. Effect of Probiotics Lactobacillus (Lacidofil® cap) for the prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhea: a prospective, randomized, double-blind, multicenter study.

Out of these 9 articles, only 5 had the keyword prevent (4, 5, 6, 7 and 9). They were selected from the 9, since the study was on the prevention of antibiotic associated diarrhea. Article 4, 5, 7, was done on older people, which was also eliminated, since the presence of chronic health conditions and interactions of other medications as well as geriatric health conditions can cause diarrhea related symptoms. This left with only 2 studies (6 and 9). From these two studies, I selected article 6, since it was the latest of the two.

The study by Selinger et al. (2013) investigates whether Probiotics VSL#3 prevents antibiotic resistant diarrhea in high risk inpatients. They studied 117 patient in active groups, and 112 in placebo group. The study showed that VSL#3 was linked to a significant reduction in the risk of antibiotic associated diarrhea.
