2.When I was tasked with the responsibility of dealing with a difficult customer. This client will not compromise on anything even the company was not at fault, I spend more than 3 hours of my work time dealing with him alone. He wanted someone from the bank to take him down his bank statement explaining every deduction made on it. I had to do it because that’s the work policy.
When my work targets were revised upwards even when business was not doing good. I would then need to arrive at work early and leave late to cover the deficit.
When I couldn’t balance my work-life relationship. I had to seek coaching from life-coach who helped me recover.
3.People closing their office doors most of the times leave me thinking they don’t want to see any anyone in their. While this may not be correct I feel strong conviction not to try and enter that particular office even on work related issues. I have since identified this trigger in me, something which have helped me manage the condition or this kind of situation in a better way. When I see a door to any office at work closed I don’t judge nowadays, I walk up to it and knock the door. I will of course get in after getting the nod from my colleague or manager and we address work related issues which boost my performance at work and also those of my colleagues.
Another trigger is when people at work break rules which to me should portrayed by all professionals and forms core value of professionalism. These core values include attention to detail and always being on time for meetings and any other program scheduled. Having understood this trigger in me, when facing this kind of situation I try as much as possible not to focus on lateness or inability of my colleagues to keep attention to detail, but rather focus on the work at hand because at the end of the day negative energy doesn’t help especially when it’s not your responsibility to check on things you are spending energy on. This eventually boosts our performance in a shorter period of time compared to when we would spend time on items out of our job description.
I also tend to get triggered by people not cleaning their desks with littered papers. This comes across to me as a person who lack work commitment and thus feeling of disapproval. But since I got aware of this trigger in Me, I have been able to manage it to the advantage of the colleagues at work. That instead of passing judgment its better if you can politely ask your colleague about the issue, maybe he/she was trying to organize the desk or was looking for certain document and many other possibilities. This in turn saves time and promotes teamwork at workplace which boosts the performance of each member of the team. (WILDING, 2017)
4.One instance where our manager at work was modeling on ideal way of handling difficult customers, he sat at customer service desk and handled all the customers for a full week. He would then calm down any angry customer in case the customer felt there’re was delay in service delivery or a certain aspect about service rendered to him or her was not according to expectations. This demonstrated management of emotions from within the work station, either between colleagues at work or when any member of staff was facing clients.
5.I will always motivate myself to give other people actions benefit of doubt incase I feel whatever he or she is doing isn’t correct. I will do this by encouraging myself not to pass any judgment first before understanding the whole issue at hand. This strategy is on the based on the fact that if someone can encourage him/herself to have a better intelligence quotient, then chances are that the strategy will succeed
I will also manage my relationship with other people. If my colleague at work shares with me an experience with me she/he did not like, then I will try to manage my relation with that particular person better going forward. The basis for this strategy is that, it is easier to know what to do on how to relate with people once you understand what they don’t like and what they like. Taking personal initiative to conform to this likes and dislikes is what will lead to a better relationship with other people; say at work or any other place once I am able to manage this relationship effectively then my emotional intelligence would have improved. (Goleman, 2010)
Another strategy I will employ to improve on my emotional intelligence is to continually review and seek improvement based on my previous experience. Once I have adopted certain strategy, it is good practice to re-evaluate it to see if it is giving desired results. With this strategy or action I will always have a better understanding of my environment at work or any other place, a basis which will lead me to an improved emotional intelligence situation.
