The Hidden Truth of Lake
Her name was Meera, an Indian girl living with her husband in the neighborhood. She was a very bright, enthusiastic and happy person. Her favorite place was the lake at the center of the city. This lake was bright, beautiful with sparkling water and rocks all around. Meer used to say that it was her favorite place, because when she comes to this lake, she can feel that she is close to her country and her father. People say that this lake was 100 years old and take a life in every one year. “Take a life”?? I could not understand the meaning when I was young, but One day, dead body of Meera was found in the lake and that was the time when I understood that what it means.
Meera has not been herself lately; she is not a happy person anymore. Something had happened to her. She was my best friend, but now she is willing to meet me or talk to me. The pain which she was feeling inside was visible on her face. One day I asked her that what has happened to her, but she could only say that she has lost whatever she had. It was the time when we were very best friends, she had told me about her mother. Her mother was a very strict women, actually for her only not for her other two siblings. Her mother never loved her, never cared for her, but yet she was happy, as her father always supported her.
Her father was the role model for her. She used to talk a lot about her father. He sent her to good school and college for education, but her mother was always against that. She could never understand her mother’s behavior. But, she said that she loved her mother a lot and misses her, when she is away from her family and was living with her husband in Australia. She always believed that her mother will love her one day and will give her a tight hug. She had a dream of keeping her head in her mother’s lap and having a sound sleep. She did not know that one day she will lose her life because of her mother. She did not know that she is living a lie. She had no idea that what was coming over.
She had told me that her father is suffering from last stage of cancer; she got a letter from her father. The letter about his condition, and how willing he is to see his daughter for last time. She immediately asked her husband to send her to India. Within a week she left |Australia and went to meet her father in India. Today when I come to his lake all those incidents become clear in my vision and I could see them happening in front of me. Her father passed away and her mother and her siblings threw her out of the house and asked her not to come again. She was unable to understand their behavior, but she could not say anything to them and came back to Australia with a box of some papers and diary of her father.
We had met her near the lake and that was the last time when I saw her. I didn’t know that we will never come to this lake together again. After two days if our last meeting, her dead body was found by police in the lake. I could not believe that I had lost my friend and that we will never meet again. There were many speculations among the people; some said that her husband has cheated her, while some said that she was in depression because of her father’s death. But, I could not accept anything. After three days of her death, I received a courier and sender was “Meera”. I was shocked!!
A line was written on the back of the box, “Please open it near the lake”. I immediately took the box with me and went to lake. I sat by the side of the lake and opened the box. It was a diary and more specifically her father’s diary. Her father had written for Meera.
“My loving daughter Meera”,
“I want to tell you a truth today. Since, I am living last days of my life and I don’t know if you will come before I leave this world? Just want to tell you something that was hidden for years in my heart.”
Whatever I read, I could not believe was true. Meera was not their real daughter. She was the daughter of her father’s sister, who became pregnant without marriage, which is a very big issue in a conservative country like India. She was forced to abort her child, but, she could not do it. She left her home and after few months came with a baby girl (Meera). She pleaded her brother to accept her daughter and give her a good life, as she was not able to provide a good life to her daughter. Her brother took the baby and since that day Meera was his daughter. But, his wife could never accept Meera. His father had left a picture of her mother and his real father in the diary, so that she could know that who her real parents were.
Meera had also left a letter for me with the diary. She had written that diary only displays the half truth, and what I read further was something I could not believe. Meera had said that his biological father is her husband’s father too. His biological father was her father-in-law. She had lived a lie for her whole life and what she knew now will not let her live. SO, she wrote that she will live this world, as she can’t live with her husband anymore, who is now her half sibling. She sent me this diary and letter, because she did not want them to be seen by her husband, as he will not be able to accept the truth. In the end she wrote that “You are my only friend and I don’t want that you always wonder about my death”, “but, I can’t take it any more”. “Throw this letter and diary in the lake and let my truth remain hidden”.
