According to me, the reader of the particular essay is the Spokane people who are eager to read and learn how to write poetry, short stories and novels. The readers would be interested because the Spokane Indians do not know how to read or write (Kennedy et al.).The Spokane people mostly lived on Spokane Indian Reservation and were very poor. The speaker in the essay tells his story as to how he started to read books and his love for reading increased. He readers will be interested to know the story of the speaker and his journey to become a writer.
From this essay, the reader expects to get a meaning from this essay. The essay tells the readers that when a person learns how to read and write he or she can be successful and save their lives. The Spokane Indians mostly live on reservation and struggle through live. The speaker in the essay is teaching the kids who refuse and resist to learn but he says that he is trying to save their lives, as this characteristic will help them acquire a job and earn wages.
The writer conveys the message of the importance of reading and writing. The author himself has learned to read, has become a writer of short stories, poetry and novels, and is well known. The author belonged to a poor family but his father was an avid reader and used to buy novels whenever he had money (Sherman). This encouraged the author into the habit of reading. The ability of reading and writing has made the writer smart, arrogant and lucky. He says that he saved his life by reading all the books he had.
The author wrote this essay remembering when he started to learn to read. The Superman comic book helped him to learn to read. The author would pretend to read the words about Superman breaking the door and that would help him learn to read. The comic book was the reason for his habit of reading. For example, “Aloud, I pretend to read the words and say, "Superman is breaking down the door."”, “Once again, I pretend to read the words and say aloud, "I am breaking down the door" In this way, I learned to read.”
The reader should see that after reading the essay it is to be understood that the author had an urge to read books and had become an avid reader like his father. The author uses reading and writing as a tool to save his and the lives of the other kids.
Thereby, the essay concludes with the perception of the importance of reading and writing. The author provides help to the kids by teaching them to read and write and saving their lives.
