Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct

Question:

Discuss about the Engineering Students Code Of Ethics.

In the present day ethics considers the honest and decent activities that guide our behaviour and actions. Accordingly, the faculty of Engineers have set forth certain code of ethics that needs to be adhering by all the students and the professors. However, it should be noted that Management involves responsibility, and in the management of engineering, engineers are responsible for managing the vast resources of the community. As per the code of Ethics, faculty as well as the engineering students should confirm their academic excellence and dedication and should tend to value the individuality of all people in the community (Starrett, Lara & Bertha, 2017). However, the above assignment deals with the importance of code of ethics among the Engineering students and the faculties and also deals with whether the code of ethics is applicable for professional or for everyone. It will also help to understand the impact of code of ethics on engineers and society as a whole.  The paper will elucidate on the major aspects such as engineers and student’s code of ethics, ethics and professionalism, PEO’s code of ethics and will provide recommendations based on the above factors.

According to the code of ethics and Professional conduct, the code of ethics is applicable to every individual in the community irrespective of their different job title, cultural and individual differences and more. As per the code of ethics, every person is entitled to act with respect and dignity and accordingly should place other’s interest above their own. Apart from this, the rules of code of ethics should be applicable to everyone within the community and not only to the professional people (Baykara, Demir & Yaman, 2015). As per the PRSA code of ethics, the ethical codes are designed for every person within the society. Prior to this code, individuals tend to set example to other members and professionals with their conducts and performance. Although, professional people are held at high esteem because of their power and control in the society. However professionals are supposed to represent the whole community with respect and dignity, therefore, it should be noted that as per the code of conduct, every individuals in the community should be held to the same standards irrespective of their gender, status culture and more. Furthermore, the use and implications of the code of ethics are not only constrained or limited only to the professionals, but every people are entitled to adhere to the code of ethics.

Code of Ethics for Engineers and Students

The codes of ethics are set of principles and guidelines that should be followed by professionals and individuals in order to conduct their role with sincerity and integrity. According to the Engineer’s code of ethics engineers and faculties are required to improve their knowledge and skills for the development of the community. Codes of ethics are ideal and tend to motivate engineering students, faculties and the engineers and accordingly help students to act with honesty and generosity. It is important to note that the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) conducts the code of ethics and expect all the engineers to show high standards of honesty and veracity (Sulaima et al., 2014). As quoted by D.H Long, “Engineers skills do not guarantee moral goodness, nor does moral goodness ensure any kind of engineer’s competence.” As per the code of ethics and conduct, engineering students are expected to apply their knowledge in wider aspect to ensure that they are able to recognize and understand any kind of ethical issues and conflicts and should also recognize the ethical standpoint of other person. Sometimes, it becomes difficult to adhere all the ideals of ethics by the engineer students for instance; students are unable to follow the load bearing standards as put forward by the Engineers code of ethics. In that case, engineering students should learn and develop ways to implement all the rules of the code in their professionalism, in order to be disciplined.

Various Universities around the globe has introduced student’s code of ethics in order to encourage and support students to learn professional behaviour, attitudes and also aims to provide better environments to the students (Rottmann et al., 2015). Accordingly, the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Toronto adopted engineering code of ethics for the students that are entitled with the academic and the non-academic activities. In general aspect, engineering student code of ethics deals with many ideals that includes

Maintaining Professional Integrity: Engineering students are responsible for maintaining their professional integrity and respect within the college campus and in community (García, 2015). Moreover, they should not indulge in any such activities that can bring into disgrace for oneself as well as for the faculties and the universities.

Promoting the principles of the code of ethics: As per the code of ethics, engineering students are entitled to promote those principles. According if any student tends to violate those ethics should report it to the higher authorities.

Engineers' Responsibility to Manage Community Resources

The code of ethics not only deals with moral code and behaviour but it connotes something more than that, which consists of rightness. Engineering students represent the overall community as they will be the future engineers and are entitled to follow the principles of ethics and should reflect the expectation of the consumers within the society. The fundamental nature of professionalism refers to that all professional person be it students or employees should be of high worthy with their work, and the trust in them that was placed by the community, they should adhere to that. It is also important to note that in case of ethical conflicts, professional engineers are tends to address those conflicts through moral reasoning (Reisig & Bain, 2016). Apart from this, majority of the engineers tend to accept institutional vision of the association in relation to the profession that implies worthy, deserving and the trust and loyalty of other engineers in the organization. However, in case of applying ethical decision engineering students are entitled to look after the values and beliefs of other students and faculties within the respective places.

Engineers consists an important part in the society as they tend to create innovative technologies that make life simple and easier. Professional engineers have a propensity to guarantee safety of the general public and should use the resources and funds that are collected from the society for designing technical systems. As per the code of ethics, engineers should voice out against any illegal deeds. Although the technologies that are designed by engineers can have both the positive and negative implications in the society, therefore it is obligatory for the engineers to make ethical decisions regarding the impacts (Riddler & Jim2003). Furthermore, engineer’s code of ethics also deals with certain things that have an impact on the society as a whole such as conservation of the material and resources for public, ensuring safety of the general people, protecting the environment and most importantly engineers should be proud with their work.

The codes of ethics of Professional Engineers Ontario are guides and information related to professionalism with respect to the community, students, employees and colleagues. The code of ethics of PEO applied to the students and engineers in order to act faithfully and should also avoid and kind of conflicts. As per the code of ethics of PEO, under section 77 of the Regulation 940, certain objectives have been adopted by PEO that are as follows:

Engineering Students' Code of Ethics

In accordance with the PEO’s code of ethics, it is the responsibility of the expert to be loyal and fair while dealing with the students and associates. Furthermore, it should also be noted that practitioner must respect the dignity and integrity of other students and employers in the respective places (Roncin, 2013). It also dealt with developing knowledge in the field of engineering that would be required for any kind of services undertaken. However, students are entitled not to share any of the crucial information with anyone else, as doing such will result to violation of the ethical laws. PEO’s law of ethics also states that engineering students while indulged in any kind of project work should co-operate with other students and must be engaged among themselves. However, it has been mentioned in the law of ethics of PEO, that students are obliged to share exact and accurate information and details with other engineering students. It is also entitled to the practitioners that they should act in respect and must enhance the general public regarding the profession.

Conclusion

From the above report, it could be deduced that code of ethics and ethical awareness are major factor for the engineering students that would help them to be more professional in their careers. Apart from this, as per the code of ethics, every individual are obliged to act with respect and dignity and should place other people interest above their own. It should also be noted that every individuals in the community are held at same esteem irrespective of their status and there are no differences between professionals and individuals in the society. Different Universities have different code of ethics for the engineering students and faculties, for instance, according to the National Society of Professional Engineers, engineering students are enforced to show high veracity and integrity and are expected that the students would imply their skills and knowledge for the betterment of the society as a whole. Prior to this, engineering faculties and students are also encouraged to promote the principles of the code of ethics to other people.

Majority of the Engineering Universities have incorporated code of ethics so that Universities can encourage students to learn moral goodness and behaviour that would help them in their future professionalism. However, based on the above report, this section will provide few recommendations that would help engineering students to adhere fully with the engineering code of ethics and would help them in maintaining and balancing professional integrity. In order to implement the code of ethics among the students much better ways, Universities can introduce a new planned behaviour model that will analyse the ethical awareness among the engineering students and accordingly effective measures could be taken. Furthermore, engineering faculties should give proper training to the students in order to understand the ethics much precisely.
