Introduction to Online and Traditional Classroom Education

There has been an ongoing debate about which is better between online education and traditional classroom education. With the development in technology, there has been an increase in opportunities for attaining a large of skills through the internet. The traditional method of education includes classroom education where students attend classes physically and get to interact with their teachers and peers. However, technological growth and advancement hold the potential to enhance access to education and learning experiences along with reducing the cost of high-quality education received by the students.

The system of online education is quite flexible as it permits the students to study through their own devices in the comfort of their homes or any place they deem fit. In this case, the students are not interacting with their teachers face-to-face which allows the students to study from anywhere on the globe.

The major difference between online classes and offline classes lies in the location. Online classes are flexible and students can attend classes sitting at home or anywhere in the world (Adedoyin & Soykan, 2020). It also becomes easier to prepare a schedule to complete the course work more efficiently and communicate with the teacher and students can be done at their own pace. The students have the option to select a comfortable environment that would aid them to focus better while studying. The online lectures that are provided in recorded versions can be listened to even when the student is at the gym. This eliminates the possibility of missing classes and not arriving on time if the classes were offline. Online classes also reduce the costs associated with education as students only pay for the tuition fee and other expenses like books or application fees and transportation along with housing costs can be saved. This translates into lower debts and increases savings (Arkorful & Abaidoo 2015). The students are provided with opportunities for learning to their maximum capacity without the need for too many buildings and infrastructures.

Through online education, information and communication technology have come together in the sphere of learning and teaching. The internet can be a great medium for providing resources and individuals can utilize it for multiple purposes including education (Alshamrani, 2019). Online education includes various kinds of learning, for instance, distance learning, distributed learning, and hybrid learning. Opportunities for learners are present with the provision of discussion forums which eliminates the barriers between learners that can have the possibility of hindering the participation of learners who have a fear of talking to their fellow learners. The concept of online learning can acts as a motivation to students that will make interacting with other students easier enabling a better exchange of views. Hence, communication is eased and relationships are improved that can sustain the learning experience. Through online learning, each individual’s differences in learning can be taken into consideration. This makes it easier for learners who want to focus on essential parts they want to learn and some learners receive a short review of the whole course.

Advantages of Online Education

The Covid-19 pandemic that hit the world in early 2019 had caused multiple disruptions in the education systems as schools and colleges were closed due to health restrictions and lockdown to curb the rapid spread of the virus. To continue with education, technology played an important role in shifting the learning experience to an online mode of learning. Hence, online learning became an effective mode to keep educational activities running and prevented the loss of academic sessions due to lockdown initiated in most parts of the world (Paudel, 2021). Online education has increased student retention of study materials by 60% compared to a face-to-face curriculum. This can be attributed to the fact that students are able to learn more online as learning takes less amount of time if its online in comparison to a traditional classroom (Li & Lalani, 2020). Students have the prospects to learn at their own pace and can go back to revising the topics over and over again. In research conducted in Nepal, it was estimated that an online mode of education proved to be beneficial in boosting online research and people would connect with each other in the global village. Almost 76.9% of participants informed online courses promoted an increase in independency in learning (Paudel, 2021). It also increased self-discipline and provided them with flexibility along with the provision of large resources of knowledge.

As the traditional mode of education faced a transformation, learning by being physically present in the classroom is not the only option of education available to learners. Facilities of online education open the prospects for higher education students to take up distance courses since online education is flexible (Josep, 2022). There has been a significant rise in massive open online courses that are self-paced online courses. They are available to everyone free of charge and are mostly offered by reputed institutions that provide learners with opportunities to take part in additional courses (Lane, 2021). Platforms created for online courses are easily navigable and personalized. The online platforms for higher education help the students in building their road map of education with digital alerts and tools that aid in time management. Pioneers of online higher education provide the students with single sign-on facilities that can help the students interact with their classmates and professors. Student engagement is enhanced in online education and remote students can benefit from online facilities by engaging more than through face-to-face curriculum (Child, et.al., 2018). Deliverance of online education on digital platforms can transform curriculum into interactive sessions that are engaging. Students get the provision to learn from technologies that use AI technology that can detect the student’s requirements and support is provided accordingly.

Despite the advantages of online education, there are certain disadvantages that are associated with the online form of learning. First of all, online education depends on internet connectivity and technology. Poor internet connectivity can lead to technical glitches that may arise when an online session is being conducted. It also lacks practice-based study as practical knowledge is difficult to learn online without hands-on attempts. It is a good way to gain theoretical knowledge and the gain of practical knowledge cannot be replaced by the concept of e-learning. Social interaction is diminished in this case as students find it difficult to communicate when they have to ask questions regarding the topic being taught. Technical glitches may arise that can disrupt the communication while the student is asking a question or answering what is being asked. Another drawback that needs to be mentioned is the management of screen time. Students have to remain logged on to the screen for a long period of time on a regular basis. This can prove to be detrimental to the health of the students, especially harming the eyes.

Online Education during Covid-19

These aspects of online education can be evaded in an offline mode of education. Students can interact with their instructors directly without facing technical glitches. Students from poor households having limited financial resources find it challenging to acquire a high-speed internet connection which can be costly (Biswas & Dey, 2020). In such cases, offline education is preferable for such students. Development of personality and confidence-building is boosted in the case of face-to-face interaction as students learn from experiences that are not present in the online mode of education.  Activities other than studies are possible to partake in an offline form of education which is not possible if the entire curriculum is online. Students can develop their social skills through face-to-face interaction with their classmates.

Conclusion

After delving deep into all the aspects concerning both an online mode and an offline mode of education, it can be said that online education has a good set of advantages. Online education can be availed even if the student is remotely based and also time-saving. The time elapsed in traveling and commutation in case of an offline mode of education can be evaded if the classes are provided in an online mode. It was also seen that education continued even when the world was going through a pandemic and educational institutions were closed down to abide by the health restrictions imposed. Students can take up courses online and increase the range of their knowledge domain in the comfort of their homes. Many universities have started offering online courses on major degrees that the students can apply to while being in any part of the world. This increases the popularity of distance learning where time and distance are not a boundary. This also enhances the skill to handle technology and abilities to operate different tools are also enhanced. Even though the advantages of an offline mode of education exist, online education cannot be considered a replacement. However, the online mode of education in itself is very convenient and efficient along with being cost-effective. Therefore, with the advancement in technology, online education will become more popular in the coming days.
