ENGL1110 Introduction To Prose Fiction

tag 0 Download 8 Pages / 1,786 Words tag 24-10-2020

Write an essay on a general topic of public interest about which you develop a clear, arguable point of view. Your assumed audience are the readers of a general interest newsmagazine with wide circulation within Canada. You must develop a clear thesis, provide evidence to support that thesis including ideas, information, and/or data gathered through library research, and attempt to persuade your readers that your point of view is the correct one.

Topic Choice

Part of my evaluation of your essay will be assessing how appropriate your topic is for a general readership.  I will also be examining how carefully you have narrowed and focused that topic so that it can be discussed in a short essay.  Here are some examples of possible topics, but you are not required to choose among them:

Provide Civilian Oversight of the RCMP

Provide Free post-secondary tuition

Support Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion

Decriminalize all recreational drugs

Switch to Year-round daylight savings time

Provide universal basic income (UBI)

Require all citizens to vote in elections

Place tolls on BC highways

Lower Voting age to 16

Require mandatory vaccination of children

Provide Free public transit

Expand Insite Safe Injection Sites

Your Point of View

Each of these topics are examples of public policies that may be or are being considered by government.  You can either support the policy or oppose it using credible research sources and logical argument to support your own point of view.

Research and Citation

You are required to use a minimum of THREE primary or secondary sources in your essay.  The research librarian workshop will discuss the differences between primary and secondary sources.  In addition, your essay must properly cite the information from these sources either through indirect or direct quotation or paraphrase.

Thesis and Thesis Support / Annotated Works Cited

Two weeks before the research essay must be handed in, you are required to submit through the Moodle site:

  • Your thesis statement, clearly expressing your point of view on the topic you’ve chosen.  Make sure that your thesis complies with the three elements of arguable statements:  you state a point of view that others might not share, raise an issue regarding the topic about which no absolute answer exists, and urge the reader to consider the assertion as fact.
The thesis statement can be anywhere from one to five sentences long.
  • Three primary pieces of evidence that you will use to support your point of view.  Each supporting idea or set of facts should be summarized in a short paragraph.

One week before the research essay is due, you are required to submit through the Moodle site:

  • A list of the three primary or secondary sources in appropriate MLA citation format and an explanation of the specific ideas from them you will be using to support your arguments.
