Industry best practice in organizational and project management
An organization usually brings people of different levels and skills together and integrates to deliver services that would eventually see organization achieve its missions and objectives (Achilles, 2013). The coordination of these different functions relies on the managers who are usually at different levels as deemed necessary by the organization. The authority to use the resources of the organization and making decisions regarding smooth running of the system is left in the hands of the managers. Management exists in three levels that form a hierarchy with each management level assigned a jurisdiction.
The principles of planning, organization, direction and control of people and resources
A manager requires a number of skills to ensure he effectively delivers his managerial roles. These skills include technical, interpersonal, diagnostic and conceptual skills (Bhamidimarri, 2016). Technical skills would see the manager deliver proficiently in his services while interpersonal skills would ensure there are smooth correlation and coordination between the various departments in the organization. Technical skills promote the relations between the human capitals in the organization. Diagnostic skills develop remedies to any problems or challenges the organization is facing while conceptual skills enable a manager to comprehend how the different units of the organization function as a single entity.
Regardless of the level of management, managers perform the same roles. Among these roles include decisional, interpersonal as well as informational roles. Decisional roles ensure the resources of the organization are properly utilized and within a proper plan strategy. It is for this role that the management of the company decided not to buy another generator to replace the existing one. By buying another generator, the company management felt it would be spending more than it should on maintaining the model (Moodley, 2014). This would be a way of misappropriation of the organization’s resources.
The top level managers are in charge of the overall operations of the whole organization. Their decisions and actions affect the whole firms and are therefore fully responsible for the performance of the organization. In this light, my proposed changes and amendments to the maintenance manual of the GPU were submitted to the top management. In so doing, these changes would easily be effected in the whole organization and across all the departments. This would ensure all the departments are updated and any possible errors are not made as a result of lack of the information. The top management has the sole authority and capability to see the changes in the maintenance manual enacted in the organization as a whole.
First level managers have the least jurisdiction and control. they are in most cases supervisors of a task or departments. They handle only one line in their managerial duty. Having been appointed to spearhead the recovery of the GPU, I took over the management of maintenance department of electronic equipment. In this capacity, I was serving as a first level manager and had a team of technicians who were to help me with the work. In effectively used my managerial skills to ensure smooth flow of the task and timely delivering of high quality and desired output.
Theory and practice in interpersonal and business communication
Through interpersonal skills, I would mobilize the technicians and ask them to remove the generator for inspection. I was able to ensure all the technicians had a role to play and none of them was sidelined. Still, using diagnostic skills I managed to come up with a way out on how to increase the voltage and the frequency of the GPU. Most of the managerial skills are acquired through experience and knowledge derived from varied sources.
Upon completion of the project, I handed over the recovered GPU to the operations department that later made it available for use for normal flights once again. It was important to hand over the GPU to the operations manager and not to the top manager. This is because it is from this department that the device can be tested and proved to meet the working requirements. At the same time, specialists and professionals who handle and deal with the GPU models are found mostly in the operations department which is a first level managerial level.
Personnel management in an organization deals with hiring and developing workers in a bid to make them have more value in the organization (Moodley, 2014). This is achievable through job analysis, resolution disputes, orientation and training, selection of the right personnel for the job, determination, and management of salaries and wages among other functionalities. The organization for which I served as a trainee met the part of the personnel management objectives. I served in the organization as a trainee in which I learned new skills as I was shared with the organization on my skills.
By being a trainee in the organization, I was able to gain experience and establish new ways of approaching challenges. In this light, the company hired me to help in the recovery of the GPU. The organization considered having trained to an extent that the management was confident that I would successfully deliver to their desires. Through personnel management, an engineering organization or any relation firms get an opportunity to receive the services of qualified and need professionals.
Principles of marketing, finance, accounting, law and business
Financial analysis deals with the process of evaluating projects or any other entities related to finance (Achilles, 2013). The evaluation is aimed at estimating their performance and how suitable they are. Financial analysis is a role mainly played by the top managerial levels so as to justify the cost-benefit analysis of undertaking an activity. From the financial analysis, an activity is gauged on the level of its profitability, liquidity, stability or even solvency to allow for a monetary investment.
The top management of Shaheen airport services gauged the viability of buying a new generator before it could settle on a decision. Having spent quite a lot on the same maintenance process, the organization decided it would not go for another generator. This was arrived after determining the cost benefit analysis of the investment. The company found out that by buying another generator it would spend to an extent of losing value for money.
Professional responsibility, issues of sustainability, social effects, and ethical aspects of engineering
Engineers are expected to be careful while dispensing the requirements of their profession since this is a career that has direct influence and impact on life. Failure to adhere to the code of ethics and conduct may culminate into a disaster that may not only lead to the destruction of property but also a massive loss of lives (Moodley, 2014). This calls for engineers to practice in accordance with the engineering code of ethics provisions.
It is thus important for engineers to be extra vigilant with their undertakings and observe safety both for themselves and for people around them regardless of how wonderful the project they are undertaking is. The code provides for honesty and avoidance of destruction or endangerment to the environment or the public.
