Leader is an action that leads people in any organization for achieving. Generally, the leaders achieve this through influencing the behaviour of the employees in various ways. The leader sets the clear vision for the company, guides the employees and motivates them through building the morale and work procedure (Bolman and Deal 2017). A good leader can assist an organization to achieve the goals of the business, maximize the profit as well as the productivity. Moreover, a good leader can improve the communication and listening skills of the employees and assist in improving the ability of getting success even under pressure (Fairhurst and Connaughton 2014. Pp. 7-35).
The role of the leader of Wesfarmers, that is the CEO Richard Goyder’s role is to set the direction for the organization and managing more than 200,000 employees over the resources, retailing, energy, insurance, industrial, fertilisers and safety product sectors. Secondly, he is responsible to put the top level divisional leaders in the place who are able to lead the organization. Wesfarmers mainly focuses on the people as they think that through the quality of their employees only they can achieve the competitive advantages in the market. Thirdly, he is responsible for living the organization’s value (Nichols and Cottrell 2014. Pp. 711-729) Wesfarmers have 4 core values as the grout that includes boldness, accountability, openness and integrity. He always tries to make it sure that there is continuing integrity, energy, creativity and innovation in the company. Mr. Goyder supervise over the organization in such way that most of the Australian shopper can be contacted with at any point. To manage the diverse operations of Wesfarmers, the CEO depends on every segment that contributes to the objectives of the company for delivering standard returns to the stakeholders. Further, the managing directors from various divisions are also called to express their views regarding the performance of the organization. In between the meeting of the board, Goyder is expected to be informed well about the operations of each division. Further, there is a open channel for communication among the employees of the company. He also motivates the employees to generate standard return on the investment and to protect and enhance the reputation of the company. Further, Mr. Goyder gives wide space to the divisional leaders to run the daily operation of the organization smoothly, which in turn makes the leaders accountable. Moreover, the people love this opportunity to take the decision regarding responsible things. The responsibilities of the Group Chief Executive OfficerBradford Banducci and the Chairman of Woolworths Limitedare clearly separated and defined. The chairman is accountable for delivering the board’s overall leadership and assuring that the board is receiving the clear, timely and accurate information to assure that the directors can efficiently perform their tasks. Further, the group CEO is responsible for executing the approved strategies. The main objective of the CEO is to increase and maintain the value of the shareholders and assuring that the overall objectives of the Woolworths are properly managed (Seibert et al. 2017. Pp. 357-397). He is further responsible for serving and representing the shareholder’s interest through appraising and overseeing the performance, policies and strategies of the group. Further, the CEO is responsible for looking out that each of the directors is working in accordance to their responsibilities, power and how they can represent the interest of the stakeholders in best way. He is further responsible for assuring that the company is appropriately staffed and organized and the organization has the suitable systems for enabling it for conducting the activities of the company ethically and lawfully. Moreover, he is responsible for assuring that the directors are informed in timely manner and they have sufficient information regarding the operation of the company which in turn will enable them to take appropriate decisions and suitable decisions (Woolworths Online 2017).
Richard Umbers, the CEO and managing director of Myer Pty Ltd was appointed for the post during 2015. He is responsible for the operation of the organization, delivering considerable program for the alteration and the reinvigoration for assuring that the organization become the exciting destination for all the customers. He is further responsible for the IT functions, Logistic function, financial services and online strategies of the company. Moreover, his responsibility is to look after the e-commerce program of the whole organization that is a major change initiative and was designed to establish for taking the advantages of the boom in the online shopping (Zhang et al. 2014. Pp. 675-697). He is also responsible to look into the matter that all the directors of board receives all the required information in timely and accurate manner to run the daily operation of the organization smoothly, which in turn makes the leaders accountable. The CEO, Richard claims that Myer Focuses on the customer service and it is reaping the rewards that enable them to promise for more improvement in the long-sufferings of the investors. The CEO of Myer is also responsible for maintaining the constant awareness with regard to internal as well as external competitive landscape, customers, expansion, industry developments; maintain standards of the organization (Myer 2017).
It is concluded from the above discussion that the CEO or the leader of any organization plays an important role with regard to the progress, profitability and productivity. The leader is also responsible for providing guidance and advices to his subordinates whenever required. Moreover, he formulates and implements the strategic plan that assist the business to achieve its targets and goals. Further, he is accountable for leading, directing, guiding and analysing the work of other directors, executive directors based on the reporting structure of the organization. Finally, he plays an important role in communicating, implementing and creating the mission, vision and overall direction of the organization which in turn, lead to the implementation and development of overall strategy of the organization.
