Responsibilities of an Education Counselor

Guidance Counselors are the professionals who are there to help the students in the schools throughout their developmental phase (Roberts, 2008). It is the primary responsibility of a Guidance Counselor to provide the necessary helps to the students and leading them in the right path. The students will receive the adequate and enriched knowledge from a guidance counselor to reach to their potential in social and intellectual lives. The guidance counselor needs to posses the necessary skills and educational degree to find the right job position in the public or private schools (Hooley, Matheson & Watts, 2014).  Some of the education paths are needed to be considered to become a guidance counselor. A guidance counselor needs to get a bachelor degree in psychology that will be effective enough in focusing on counseling process of the students. It is a helpful procedure to make the students deal with the social issues and provide some guidelines to lead them towards their goals. A guidance counselor can even acquire a degree of a Bachelor Degree in Education. The guidance counselor needs to get the knowledge about the education. Many of the counselors take such route to gain the enriched knowledge about the whole system. It is noted that not every school provides the counseling to the students. However, the students need counseling after their higher education or graduation. During such time, the guidance counselor can provide the proper solution to the students.

I would like to take interest in this position because I feel students need proper guidance. Sometimes they deal with some of the social issues that they are unable to express. I would like to help those students to express their feelings and guide them towards their goals. However, it is essential for me to get the proper degree to become a counselor. I like to deal with different students who have been facing some of the social issues but they are unable to express it, Moreover, I have previous experiences in dealing with such position. Therefore, I would like to apply for this post.

I have completed my master degree, first in Education and then in psychology from California University. After completing the master degree, I took training for the professional counseling session. I took the active participation on the class where a bunch of students are gathered to discuss their concerns in the educational field. I was then appointed as the professional psychology teacher in a private institution. I have worked in this institute for 2 years as a professional education counselor. I then joined the Littlebrook Elementary School in USA as the behavioural educator for the special children. After working there for 3 years, I joined as the behavior therapist in an elementary school for the deaf students. I believe that I have the proper non-verbal communication skills to provide the proper education to the deaf children. In fact, I have the proper interpersonal communication skills to convey the message to the special children.

Dear Mr. Thomas

As an Educational Counselor, I have built the strong communication skills and the interpersonal capabilities to deal with different students. Especially, the children with physical or mental disabilities need proper counseling with extreme patience level. I have developed the greater understanding skills and the communication power to understand the concerns of the students and know about their goals. Being a student of psychology, I am quite capable of resolving the social issues faced by the students. Therefore, I shall be obliged if you select me for the position.

Skills Required to be an Education Counselor

Reflection

It is quite necessary to learn about the course and gather the adequate ideas about the necessary subject. The module resources helped me much significantly to understand the necessity of the course and how I can apply my skills and knowledge to make myself competent for the position. The capstone course in the Master’s of Education Program is the most helpful platform for me. I have possessed the greater communication skills and ability to deal with various students who have been going through the tougher decisions in building their careers. In addition to this, I have gathered more knowledge about the non-verbal communication skills to deal with the students who have been going through some of the mental traumas. Sometimes, the students have been dealing with the social issues that they are unable to express. In such times, it is essential to be psychologically supportive and listen to their concerns properly. In order to become a professional education counselor, I need to build up my listening skills and understanding capability for recognizing the issues at the first place. Accordingly, I shall be able to help the students who need assistance in such cases.

Introduction

When I entered the program, I was working as the psychology teacher in Littlebrook Elementary School in US as the behaviour therapists of the special children. I have gained the experiences as the teacher of psychology that enhanced my knowledge regarding the behavioural traits maintained to deal with these children. Currently, am working as the behaviour therapists in another elementary school in US for the deaf children. My job is to guide the deaf children to acquire proper behaviour to deal with other people in the society. I have observed that many students face difficulties to pursue their careers as per their choice due to the behavioural issues. They are unable to express their wishes and aspirations and often neglected by the society.  During such time, I need to understand their psychological concerns as well. I provide such help by communicating with the students and leading them towards the right path in the educational field.

Career Goals

I aspire to become more competent in the field of psychology and establish my career as a professional education counselor. I like to deal with the students and help them in guiding the proper way and make them heading towards their career aspirations. By acquiring the greater communication skills and interpersonal attribute, I shall be able to accomplish my career goals. I would like to mention that the each of the resources in the module is much helpful for me to guide me properly for being a professionally competent person. The definitions and the procedures mentioned in the resources are quite helpful for me to understand the requirement of an education counselor. In fact, it provides me the idea that the students need their help in making preparations for their career goals. Overall, the module resources are quite helpful for me to enhance my professionalism as the education counselor.

Structuring Your Education Counselor Resume

Each of the courses holds the greater significance in shaping up my career goals.  During the Psychological Foundation of Learning, I have learnt about the proper verbal and non-verbal communication skills for teaching the students with mental and physical disabilities. Moreover, it was much helpful for me to understand the psychological factors that the students have been dealing while moving towards their career aspirations (Oliver, 2012). The Research Methods in Education course has provided me the proper guidelines to educate the children by obtaining the adequate knowledge related to the educational purposes. The Law and Ethics in Education course has provided me the adequate knowledge about the ethical parameter that I need to maintain while providing the proper counseling to the students. It was quite effective for me to understand the regulations imposed in the educational field by the government officials. The course of Cultural and Cross Cultural Perspectives in Education was beneficial for me since I could gather knowledge about the proper behavioural aspects while dealing with the students from different cultural background. The final course was the Information Systems in Education that provided me the significant knowledge regarding the information technologies that are essential to bring more innovative ways of educating children.

Preparation, Experience and Accomplishments

It has been observed that the decision making process within the educational field is much challenging. It is generally involved with a number of key players and the suitable legislators to make the proper decisions in the educational field (Nunez?Mir et al., 2016). It is to be indicated that the government officials and the elected political leaders often make the decisions within the context of the political realities of their operational location. Candidates often undertake the educational campaigns to gain the approval from the voters. Sometimes, it is also seen that the new comers oppose the decisions undertake by the senior officials of the constitutions. On the other hand, the educational type is mostly depending on the economic strength of the country. It sometimes even determines method and content of the education system. When the production exceeds the consumption level, it is often required to provide the formal education. As per the educational perspectives, the education expenditure is largely based on the amount derived from the national revenue spent by the government and individuals (Svejvig & Andersen, 2015). In fact, the schools sometimes reflect the social patterns that are prevailing in a country. The major aim of the educational system is to ensure the cultural continuity through the development and growth of the national characteristics. Therefore, it is essential to recognize the cultural aspects of the people and the changes take place within the humans. It can thus be inferred that the social, political, and economic factors have the significant impact on the education system.

The students’ engagement is necessary for increasing focus and motivations towards the educational learning. It contributes to the higher thinking skills that will lead towards the meaning learning experiences. The educators play the vital role in engaging students and adopting the student-centered approaches for increasing the opportunities of student learning. The educators often adopt several practices to engage the students in a significant way (Aveyard, 2014). Active learning is one of the most effective procedures for engaging students and making them listening to the discussed subject. In some of the cases, the educators even apply the process of dynamic discussion, which is the powerful tool of students’ engagement. The students even need to learn how to respond back quickly during any conversational sessions. Many of the educators take the help of the advanced technologies to support the learning process in an innovative way. It is necessary to pay the sufficient attention to the educational process in order to engage the students with such learning practices.

The educators need to pay attention towards the development of some of the educational theories that help in engaging the students in a significant way. According to Ford & Richardson (2013), some of the specific research skills or the leadership traits are essentially needed to be adopted. For example, the trait approach is confirming the natural attributes of the leaders that are based on their motives, personalities, skills, and values. Another form is behavioural approach, which considers the two major dimensional behaviours of the educators (Neundorf,  Niemi & Smets, 2016). The administrative educators include the proper planning, coordinating, and organizing the learning procedure in a cohesive way. Another dimension of the behavioural approach is the consideration for motivations, subordinates, and conflict management. It is necessary for the educators to pay attention towards such behavioral aspects for engaging the students in the learning practices. Another leadership approach for the educators is the contingency approach that determines the situational variables included in the educational program. Hence, the leadership theories are quite necessary to engage the learners with proper skills.

While providing the proper educational practices, the teachers often face some of the difficulties with the legal and moral behaviours (Longo & Baker, 2014). It is notable that the teachers need to provide the written authorization for the legal problems. For example, the teachers need to protect the legal activities that have the written scope for employments. During any excursion session, it has been seen that the teachers need to face some of the legal risks (Brand, 2016). The school authorities need to give the permission to facilitate any excursion program. In fact, during the counseling process, it is necessary that the teachers would not take any action that may create the physical or mental hazards to the students. The special students need the extra care. The teachers often face trouble in maintaining the proper ethical parameter while dealing with such vulnerable behaviour of the special children. Hence, the teachers need to face these ethical and legal factors more specifically.

It is necessary to maintain the diversity aspects and the quality approaches. Often, it has been noticed that the international universities involve students from different cultural background. The teachers need to consider the diversity values and promote the cultural diversity among the students (Meyer, & Benavot, 2013). During any counseling process, there is the possibility that the students may express their concerns in different manner. In Such cases, it is essential for the educators to acquire the verbal and non-verbal communication skills. It will be much helpful in interacting with the students in a proper way. Moreover, it has also been noticed that the teachers often feel more hazardous situations to maintain the equality related to the demands of the marginalized population. The collaboration of the culturally diverse students can be sometimes bringing difficulties to the teachers.

A transformative leader requires gathering the adequate knowledge regarding education policies along with the best practices. The Education Policy and Management (EPM) is designed for making the students understand the challenges and the current educational policies. American education needs to be involved with the reform-minded, strong, and idealistic leaders that are committed to excellence and equity. The educational policy in America needs to maintain the following consideration.

  • The economic and racial achievement gap
  • Leadership in frequently changing society
  • Participation of the charter schools for the educational reformation
  • Educational entrepreneurship
  • Usable data for improving the learning and teaching

The considerations of these policy implementations would be much beneficial in improving the educational policies. The educators play the vital role in engaging students and adopting the student-centered approaches for increasing the opportunities of student learning (Zeichner & Pena-Sandoval, 2015). The educators often adopt several practices to engage the students in a significant way. it is essential for the educators to acquire the verbal and non-verbal communication skills. It will be much helpful in interacting with the students in a proper way.

Introduction

While working as a behavior therapist for the deaf students in an elementary school, I have worked with students from different background. The behavior problem in the early childhood may have a negative impact on the later development of the children. The children who are hearing impaired have shown the tendency to spend less time in communicating with their parents and the caregivers, therefore more behavioral difficulties than the children with normal hearing abilities (Masandu, 2016). The primary issue that these children have is related to language. Previously conducted studies have already indicated that there is a strong relationship between the development of language and the other behavioral issues (Bruner & Tatto, 2012). My studies regarding the early childhood education has helped me in understanding behavioral difficulties of the hearing impaired students. As the children with a higher loss of hearing abilities show higher degree of behavioral issues, as a therapist, I have counseled the children along with their parents, as the child parent communication is the most essential component in the development of the children.

Career Goals

My future career goal is to become a behavioral counselor. In order to achieve the goal, my previous studies have helped to improve my skills to deal with the students. The three concentration course Developing Reading and Writing Instruction in Elementary School, Physical Motor, Perceptual and Moral Development of Children 0-8, and Administration of Child Development Centers have helped me to understand the behavioral stages of the children which are necessary for improving their further skills. A child may have different development stages since birth, such as physical, psychosocial and cognitive development. From birth to eight years of age, these development stages may have specific phases which are essential in their early development. These early development stages also enhance the later behavioral development in children. Therefore, these developmental milestones are significant for improving students who are partially impaired. Therefore, as a teacher or the behavioral counselor I may use the developmental milestone chart to graph their further improvements.

Preparation, Experience and Accomplishments

Three previous courses regarding childhood development have helped me in preparing for the developmental milestone chars for the hearing impaired students in the elementary schools. By preparing a chart of the childhood development, we can track whether a particular child is lacking behind or not. The early childhood development also depends on the physical development of children. The physical motor development refers to the development of the physical skills of the children that involves the entire body (Sword, 2012). The developments of the fine motor skills are significant as they involve the basic developments such as moving hands, undressing themselves, eating and using the utensils etc. All these development phases come at different phases of life, such as a child who is aged two to three years, one can expect him to do a scribble or using a pen or crayon, but it cannot be expected that they will be able to brush their teeth or unzip their clothes easily at that age (Fairbairn & Winch, 2011). Therefore, using the developmental map, I can figure out whether any of the students has physical impairment. The primary issue with my present students is that they are having a hard time in their language development due to their hearing impairment. This is a major issue as it hampers the further behavioral regulation. Language is not only a major developmental tool, but it also acts as a fundamental method for the social exchange. Therefore, deficit in the language development can cause a serious problem, yet that can be operated through elementary behavioral and emotional regulation.

Conclusion

By using the concentration course work I am able to map the developmental stages of the children. Mostly the language growth of the deaf children gets impaired as they are not able to copy from their surroundings. Few months ago, I had encountered a student whose language development has a huge lack due to his hearing impairment. He was three years old and did not show any significant language development. From the concentration coursework, I have made a developmental chart that depicts the developmental signs in general. However, this student was entirely unable to show any of those. For this reason, I had a session with the parents and child together. This is necessary for both of them, as in most of the cases the hearing impaired children have troubles to communicate with hearing parents and it might result in frustration. The parents also seemed to be more dominating in controlling the child. For the deaf children, it is necessary to emphasize their visual attention at that can be sustainable for further attention. The session was helpful for the student and the child parent communication that helped to enhance his language development.

Current Career Assessment

Taking a turn to the new career is sometimes hazardous for the teachers. They usually face many difficulties with the new opportunities and settings. Hence, it is necessary to organize the works in a sequential process. It has been noticed that the teachers face the trouble when the responsibilities change with time. The bigger responsibilities sometimes create the stressful conditions for the teachers (Masandu, 2016). In such times, it is necessary to break the works and finish the smaller tasks to complete the entire process. Sometimes it is even need to follow the workflow and provide the necessary input. Handling two or three students for counseling will be easier. However, if any teacher takes the extra burden, it may create the hazardous situations. Managing time in a proper way would be much necessary for each of the teachers (Raffe et al., 2012). Maintaining a proper time schedule is necessary to observe the potentiality of the teacher.

When I am in a new job of education counselor it is necessary to me to understand the body language and expression of the students. In some of the cases, it has been noticed that the students often fail to express their concerns out of fear. Some people may not get the enough support from their families to become a person as per their choice. However, it is essential to improve the verbal and non-verbal communication skills to make the students comfortable (Khine & Saleh, 2011). Therefore, the students can easily share their problems with the education counselor and present their concerns. I am currently working as the behaviour therapists for the deaf students in the elementary school. Hence, I am quite capable of maintaining the interpersonal skills and non-verbal communication process to deal with the students who are unable to express their concerns.

I am into this situation for quite a long time now. I believe that being an educational counselor; it will increase my skills and competency level in a significant manner. I shall interact with the student. I may sometimes even deal with the physically or mentally disabled students. It is essential for me to understand their voice modulation, body language and the expressions to recognize their concerns that they are unable to express. I need some of the improvements in maintaining my emotional state of mind. It is sometimes noticed that I become much sensitive. In such cases, I need to maintain the professionalism level and improve my behavior to resolve their issues.

The job duties are usually similar to me. However, I need to deal with more number of students at a time. I may face the different types of students with diverse cultural values. Moreover, I may have to deal with several depressions of the students. In such cases, it is necessary to provide them the proper behavioural therapy and meditational process that will make them more comfortable. The proper therapeutic behavior can be much beneficial in providing them the proper counseling regarding their careers and lives.

Peak and Valley Moments

The most satisfying part of my job is I shall be able to help the students by identifying their concerns in a significant way. The use of the necessary non-verbal and verbal communication skills would be beneficial to make them comfortable and express their feelings (Moldoveanu & Narayandas, 2016). For example, I can make eye-contact and listen to their concerns. It will be helpful for them to become free and express whatever they are feeling inside. I can even provide them the proper therapy suggestions like meditation therapy. It will be beneficial in taking them out of depression.

The unsatisfying about my current job is the job policies. Sometimes many students may get vulnerable and we cannot apply any other procedure to help them. For example, we need to calm those students by speaking in an effective way. Even when they remark badly, we need to stay calm and make them understand the proper way. I may sometimes feel bad and hurt during such situation.

Self Assessment

Communicating with the students, understanding their concerns and providing them the proper solution are my major interests in my job. I have the good verbal and non-verbal communication skills to communicate with the students. I maintain the good interpersonal skills to make the students comfortable and reliable. The most important thing is to prioritize the interest of the students and help them to accomplish their goals (Oxford, 2016). The proper educational setting is the “must have” for my job. My major limitation is working in an emotional state of mind. I need to gain more professionalism to overcome such emotional outrages. It is the right time for me to change my job and make myself a professional education counselor.

Action Steps

  • My immediate goal is to achieve the proper educational counseling job where I can help the students to accomplish their career goals.
  • My medium term goal is to improve my emotional state of mind and professionalisms to help the students in a significant way.
  • My long term goal is to maintain the education policy to grow my career in this field.

Professional Development Plan

The professionalism skills are necessary to develop my career (Walker, 2017). I have noticed that I am quite sensitive and sometimes cannot handle the emotional outbursts of the students. Hence, I need to improve these areas that will help me in preparing for the next step of my life. I can get the opportunity to grow my career as the professional education counselor. I can even provide the beneficial advices to the students that will lead them towards accomplishing career goals. The major limitation is the emotional state of mind and the work pressure. If I need to handle more than ten students at a time, it would be quite difficult for me to keep the focus. Hence, the limitation may persist. However, the effective non-verbal, verbal, and interpersonal skills can support to grow my career in a significant way.

I would like to see myself as the head of the educational counselor team to deal with more difficult situation in next one year. I would even like to see myself as the principle of the education center for providing the secure policies and regulations related to the educational improvements in next five years.

Conclusion

Communicating with the students, understanding their concerns and providing them the proper solution are my major interests in my job. However, I become much sensitive to handle the different emotional outbursts of the students. I can get the opportunity to grow my career as the professional education counselor. I can even provide the beneficial advices to the students that will lead them towards accomplishing career goals. My major limitation is working in an emotional state of mind. I need to gain more professionalism to overcome such emotional outrages. However, overcoming such challenges, I would be able to grow my career as a professional education counselor.
