Discuss about the HRM ?

Answer :

Introduction

Spencer and Harris-Bowlsbey (2013) depicts that the process that enhances a person's work identity from the childhood age to the professional life is known as career development. It is also evident that every successful people have to undergo through this phase of development for attaining prosperity in life (Brown, 2015). This assessment will focus on two such leaders- Mark Zuckerberg and Donald Trump, who not only got success in their life but also become admiration to the community through their working procedure.

Moreover, this assessment will also illustrate some career development theories-Holland’s theory, Nancy Schlossberg Theory, Parsons' theory and Krumboltz's theory that best fits their career path. I will also highlight on the comparison of their values with that of mine so that I can explain the reason of my appreciation for these two leaders.

Mark Zuckerberg is famously known for the development of the popular social networking site called Facebook and serves the role of chairman, chief executive officer, and co-founder of Facebook (Tucker, 2014). Mark Zuckerberg graduated in 2002 from Phillips Exeter Academy and developed on February 4, 2004 (Lilley et al., 2012). Moreover, being a computer programmer, Mark Zuckerberg have taken regular initiatives for enhancement of Facebook like developing Wirehog, which is a friend-to-friend file sharing program that allows transferring files from Facebook, Beacon, a social advertising system that allows information sharing with friend based on their browsing activities (Lilley et al., 2012). Kirkpatrick (2012) also stated that Mark also developed Internet.org launched Internet.org is to connect people through the internet and make them able to create jobs and open up new markets. On the other hand, the other leader Donald Trump is not only the present President of United States but is an active American businessman, television personality and politician. Being born in the year 1946, Donald Trump started working for father’s company ‘Elizabeth Trump and Son” from 1962 and become the sole owner in 1972 (D'Antonio, 2015). In career life of Donald Trump, there are some biggest success and failures. Hall et al. (2016) mentioned that some of the successful career highlights are the renovation of Grand Hyatt Hotel, the establishment of Trump Tower, 40 Wall Street and Trump International Tower Chicago. However, Bronson (2012) furthermore highlighted the failed career initiatives- Trump International Resorts, Trump Ice, Trump University, Trump Mortgage, GoTrump.com, Trump Steaks and Trump Magazines and all these initiatives are not in existence at present times.

Image 1: Holland’s theory for Career Development

(Source: Sharf, 2016)

Holland’s theory is one of the career development theories that are precisely related with Mark Zuckerberg, who utilises his competencies with people he prefers to work that is some of his college friends- Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. Sharf (2016) also highlight that they together introduced Facebook to other college campuses that had resulted in their rapid popularity. Moreover, it can also be said that Mark Zuckerberg have also investigated that people usually prefers to keep contact with their school and college mates even after they leave the campus and this is the major concern for the development of Facebook (Swanson & Fouad, 2014). However, in the case of Donald Trump, he prefers only Americans to work in the US and not a member of other nation. In comparison to Mark and Donald Trump, the only difference in this context is Mark prefer similar traits in human to work together while Donald prefers similar nationality irrespective of their competencies.

Moreover, in terms of Krumboltz's theory, Patton and McMahon (2014) stated that sometimes unplanned events also provide career opportunities that drive success in the profession. However, in the case of Mark Zuckerberg, he did a primary research before formulating Facebook and take regular initiative for developing it; however, the sudden transition comes when businesspeople target this social media as an advertising platform. However, Krumboltz's theory of sudden event is perfect matches with Donald Trump's career. Pryor and Bright (2012) stated that Donald does not have any prior experience in the prior military or governmental service and is also the first person to become the U.S. president at 70. However, business moves like the renovation of Wollman Rink and Grand Hyatt Hotel and purchasing estates like Wall Street have brought his success but some worst business decision results in downfall his career profitability (Swanson and Fouad, 2014). Thus, it can be said in the context of Krumboltz's theory; Mark Zuckerberg have the curiosity to explore learning opportunities; while, Donald Trump focuses on flexibility to address a variety of circumstances by brainstorming ideas of that ensure success in business.

Image 2: 4S model of Nancy Schlossberg Theory

(Source: Anderson & Goodman, 2014)

Moreover, in Nancy Schlossberg Theory, change of roles, personal relationship and daily routines are a major concern. Donald Trump’s nationality is American and possesses the religion of Presbyterian; while Mark Zuckerberg’s birth country is America and considered him as an atheist (Anderson and Goodman, 2014). As mentioned earlier, Mark developed Facebook by considering the need of getting in touch with their old contacts and this is the trigger time in his case, on the other hand, Donald’s membership of the “birther” movement and highlighted the ‘Birther issue’ is the trigger point for opposing Barrack Obama for presidency (Rothwell and Diego-Rosell, 2016). Mark Zuckerberg always got the support from his family and acquaintances and had an intense social life; while, Donald Trump does not have a stable personal life. However, in the case of both leaders, they have seen the situation differently. Donald Trump had taken several methods of business in which some ideas leads to success while some of them failed. Experts believed that Donald Trump had taken these business decisions by evaluating his business abilities. Mark Zuckerberg also evaluates the social trends and the opportunities for technology in the market before the development of Facebook (Dodo, 2016). Anderson and Goodman (2014) stated that Mark also assesses knowledge of labour market and formulates new job opportunities for computer programmers. However, in both the cases, there is a huge job opportunity for efficient employees, which results in the betterment of the community. Pryor and Bright (2012) depicts that the only difference is that Mark identifies the global opportunity for every people while Donald Trump focuses only on the Americans. All these aspects illustrates the Frank Parson’s career development theory.

Conclusion

I can relate my trait of valuing positive thoughts like Mark Zuckerberg and Donald Trump. I want to say that Donald Trump, on one hand, values he believes without considering the fact whether his decision will be fruitful or not; while Mark Zuckerberg values community and their wellbeing irrespective of their nationality and religion. In this case, my traits are similar like Mark Zuckerberg, who believes in skills and competencies rather than nationality. However, according to me, if I have to consider my nation’s people I want to train them for the kind of business that I want to start in the community. Moreover, I also do not prefer any sudden event that provides huge opportunity; while, I believe that if I can find a job that satisfies my skills and knowledge, I can get many opportunities that can ensure my success as I can predict the future consequences in that field. Thus, I am more similar to Mark Zuckerberg. However, I like the trait of Donald Trump that he kept his optimistic belief throughout the ups and downs of his life; however, he makes me believe that in spite of skills and knowledge in one field, career opportunities may come from another field, but we have to perform this responsibility efficiently.
