Introduction

Reflective journal is the way of recording personal ideas, thoughts and experiences along with reflecting on those experiences (Al?karasneh 2014). I was associated with the topic “Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Social Networks in Business” for both assignment 1 and assignment 2. In assignment 1, I had to do deep secondary research concerning the said topic and in assignment 2, I had to present the research proposal. In this assignment, I will present the weekly reflective journal and my journey through the research accomplishment by applying the research paradigm. I must indicate that through the research, I gained enough theoretical and practical knowledge surrounding the research topic, which will definitely help me in my future program, career and life. For this particular reflective journal that I am about to present will consist of 12 entries, in which my knowledge and experience that I have accumulated will be discussed.

Reflective Journal

In the first week, I came across the topics related to the nature, process and strategy of business research. The value of strategies lies in collecting accurate information regarding final business research (Rowlinson, Hassard and Decker 2014). In this week I came to know the method that needs to be followed in accomplishing a business research and therefore I gained knowledge regarding the ways of marketing research through secondary articles and resources.

In second week, I got ideas about research design, planning and process. This week was quite vital for me as I never knew the multiple ways and tools that were required for any research. I got the theoretical knowledge of research methodology, tools and chronological procedures that were vital for my research proposal.

In week three, I learned about writing a literature review and the necessary points that must be discussed. Based on this week, I completed my assignment 1 and this has helped me further in completing my research proposal. Much of the ideas that I gained in week 2, helped me in forming parts of assignment 2. Such knowledge about social media and its applications in organization will help me in future to complete my future coursework and even in my future career and employment.

The learning process in week 4 dealt with research ethics, which is a part of research methodology. The value of this learning lies in marinating ethics in all aspect of research process (Bourke 2014). I came to understand that my topic must be completed through primary data collection methodology and for that Data Protection Act must be followed. Ethics will help my proposal to be free from privacy acts.

This week gave the detailed idea of data collection procedure for a research. This learning process helped me in getting the idea of qualitative research, sampling and participant observation for my research proposal. Based on this week, I got the theoretical knowledge of various data collection techniques and the benefits.

Focus group and interview was the main learning outcome for this week. Based on this learning process, I designed my proposal data collection technique and came to understand that interview will be more suitable than focus group as the best response will be collected from managers of the concerned organizations of study.

Qualitative data collection technique was the main focus of this week and through this, I came to understand that interview process is considered as the qualitative tool for data collection. I gained knowledge of specific methodology and tool for data collection through qualitative process.

Sampling and quantitative data collection was the main focus for this week and based on this I proposed that 10 would be the sample size to whom questionnaire must be provided for data collection. 10 businesses which use social networking for the business will be selected randomly in Australia.

Interview and questionnaire design are the main tools for data collection for a primary research (Bell 2013). I got knowledge of how to use questionnaire and its format that will be easy and opinion based for the sample size. Such methods will also help me in future to complete my dissertation.

Structured Observation and Content Analysis was the main learning topic for this week and I got idea of the ways of statistical analysis methods and even interpretation of figures that must be related with research paradigm.

I came to understand that secondary analysis and quantitative data analysis the ways through which findings can be analyzed. I even got idea that sources such as journal articles, book reviews, websites, newspapers and news articles are the most suitable ways for secondary analysis.

This was the final week, where I got idea of combining qualitative and quantitative methods. This week was very important for me as I designed my final research proposal with both qualitative and quantitative methods. I finally decided that both survey and interview would be suitable for my research topic and based on this I justified my mixed data collection methodology.

Conclusion

While concluding, I must highlight about the learning process that helped me in forming my research methodology and data collection procedures. My opinion about this learning experience is that such topics that were discussed in the course will help me in future to establish a complete set of resources that might be required for completing a research. This learning experience will serve me in future career when I will be working in an organization to form the data analytics. Also, in my future courses, I will be able to relate the most suitable tools required for a research so that error free outcome is achieved. I understood that business research helps in identifying the most potential driving forces affecting the market and the learning process that quantifies the data from market.

Finally, at the end of the learning process, I understood the vitality of completing assignment 1 and 2 as what I accumulated earlier was only theoretical knowledge, but later through implementation, I got experience. I feel that this learning process will definitely help me in future to design my final dissertation and the most appropriate methodology suitable for achieving accurate research outcome. The research subject will identify the impact of social media in business and even in my future profession I can serve as a data analyst for the organization with which I will be associated.
