Transcultural nursing refers to the process by which nurses interact with the patients against the concept of culture. Gaining insights from nursing and anthropology, the notion is supported by a wide range of research and theories. It is cognitive that emphasises on global cultures and comparative cultural caring and nursing phenomena (Giger, 2016). The present report highlights the understanding of transcultural nursing and the means by which it can be applied to nursing practice. A logical conclusion is presented at the end of the report.
According to Black (2016), transcultural nursing refers to the study of cultures exhibited by healthcare consumers to understand similarities and differences in cultures across human groups coming from different communities. The theory had been proposed by famous nurse Madeliene Leininger in the year 1966. Transcultural nursing is regarded as a vital element of healthcare service delivery in the contemporary era. Against the backdrop of the ever-increasing multicultural population across countries, there is a major challenge faced by nurses to provide holistic and individualised care to those in need. Nurses are therefore required to appreciate and acknowledge the cultural differences in healthcare customs, values, beliefs as exhibited by patients. Transcultural nursing is the foundation stone for delivering care that matches the desired patient outcomes and ensures patient satisfaction. As opined by Giger (2016) transcultural nursing is the expertise in the nursing field responding to the requirements for having a broadened perspective within clinical practice as patients come from different background, religious and cultural. When regarded as a discipline, transcultural nursing centres on joining international and transcultural content into the training of nurses. This encompasses learning and following cultural differences, nursing in different countries, addressing international complex health issues and working in international health organisations. The primary objectives of transcultural nursing are to successfully provide culturally congruent nursing care, along with providing culture-specific and universal nursing care practices. Well-being and health of the patients are expected to become better through this nursing process. Patients can better address adverse conditions and illness in a meaningful manner.
Transcultural nursing can be applied on a daily basis within all forms of the patient population admitted to health care settings. This would include paediatric population to geriatric patients with different health needs. Within these challenging population, the nurses must ensure that the care provided is reflective and meets the needs of the population as well as their families. Transcultural nursing acts as an avenue for ensuring that the cultures of the clients are respected and maintained (Douglas et al., 2014).
Transcultural nursing is aligned with the principles of social justice and human rights. Nurses need to engage in gaining an understanding of the values, traditions, perspectives, practices and family systems of patients in order to demonstrate transcultural practice. They must be aware of the complex variables associated with the patient that has a deep impact on the well-being and health conditions of the patients. Acknowledging the cultural heritage and ethnic background of the patients ensures that the patient is provided with a safe and secured environment within which he is cared for. Transcultural nursing can be applied for promoting social justice for all. Leadership skills are to be developed for advocating fro socially justified policies (Marrone, 2016). It is to be mentioned in this regard that for facilitating the process of transcultural practice, it is essential that nurses have strong cross-cultural communication skills. Culturally competent and safe nonverbal and verbal communication skills are required for identifying the unique health needs of the patients. The clinical practice is to be based on evidence-based interventions systematically tested to have applicability in diverse patient population.
Transcultural nursing can be applied as an ongoing process wherein a comprehensive care plan is made as per the preferences of the patients. Aligning the patient needs, in terms of psychological and emotional aspects, with therapeutic approaches is beneficial. The process involves the integration of cultural desire, cultural knowledge, cultural awareness, cultural encounters and cultural skill. It is also to be mentioned that health-seeking behaviours of patients, families and communities can be changed to aa large extent. Those who are underserved, vulnerable, economically disadvantaged and mentally challenged can be targeted through this form of nursing (Douglas et al., 2011).
From the above discussion, it can be concluded that transcultural nursing is essential for promoting culturally safe care. The requirements for transcultural nursing across care settings is profound. Adding research on the same topic would be helpful in gaining more insights into how transcultural nursing can be applied in clinical practice against diverse patient needs.
