The Reinvention Network is a small, project-based professional services firm that has adopted a network-centric form of organisation  The operation of the firm may be likened to that of an architect’s practice where ideas from clients and ideas from the practice are combined to develop a particular concept (like a project charter) which is then refined to develop plans and specifications (a set of requirements).

Implementation arrangements are established either by the architect or separately by the client (implementation / change management plan). The architect may be asked to provide advice during implementation or be made responsible for managing an implementation. There are reviews with clients at different stages. Initial plans may require modification as a project progresses.

The Reinvention Network was established in the early 2000’s, mainly taking on direct consulting projects. Linkages with university business schools building on prior personal relationships were established. But over time, the profile of projects changed, more frequently involving cooperation with a university partner. It was found that most of the time, except for background research, meetings and activities took place at client premises, so core operations moved from a dedicated space to one in a co-working facility This allowed the Reinvention Network to establish a virtual office with access to meeting rooms and a computer lab as needed.

The firm operates with a small core group that has responsibility for administration and finance (most of which is outsourced), for marketing and background research activities. Personal networking is at the core of the marketing activities, and is done in conjunction with network partners. Sometimes an opportunity is identified by The Reinvention Network and a team of partners assembled for the job, and sometimes.

The Reinvention Network is invited to contribute to another partner’s project. At any given time there will be a portfolio of projects to be managed, some at the development stage, and some at the operational stage. Collaboration with clients frequently involves face-to face contact supported by web-based tools. Collaboration with partners more commonly relies on web-based tools with some face-to-face meetings (sometimes via Skype for international partners.

The focus is on client projects or research projects exploring topics of interest to a number of clients.
