What is your opinion about how women are treated in our correctional system?

In the modern era, the African American women in jail are increasing in number than before. As a result, they are subjected to the current correctional system. Despite the fact that women in our society bring the communities and families together. However, men who are incarcerated access few resources as well as stigma due to their criminal record (Krishnamurthy, 2013).Earlier on, the African American women in prison were treated harshly by the whites. Additionally, they received disproportionately long sentences with the aim of denying them the freedom of speech. In the current correctional system, women are treated better than before because their behaviors explain the reason for incarceration. Rather than focusing on who benefits when women are incarcerated.

Additionally, the system distinguishes between labeled and unlabeled criminals in the society. Consequently, this correctional system allows organization to support women and inmate mothers. Therefore,   they provide creative writings, literacy lessons, and books. As a result, women in prison gain education and knowledge despite their sentences. Additionally, the correctional system provides projects that women in prison carry out to the public despite their jail sentences. In the current policy, the advocacy organizations equip women with skills and resources to make them fit in the impoverished communities after their release. Additionally, they acquire knowledge about drug treatment, education, and health care (Strzepek, K., Jacobson, B., & Van Blair, K, 2011). The correctional system creates a platform for women to stay in affordable houses, employment and transitional income. As a result, the system cares and caters for the women in prison. Therefore, the community will not be in a position to discriminate them or treat them unfairly.

Questions to answer

  • How do you define crime?

A crime is a wrong action done by an individual to another individual or state.

  • Where is the prison nearest to where you live? There is a prison at Alabama. Are men, women, or both incarcerated there? Both women and men are incarcerated there. Who are they in terms of class, race, and age?

The black males have the highest criminal record. Surprisingly, the white females are more than the black females. Statistics shows that inmates are between 24-55years.

Why is it important to have the perspective of an African writer on race in America? How does reading the story make you more alert to race, and to the cultural identifications within races and mixed races? Did the novel enlarge your own perspective, and if so, how?

The Americanah is a book that brings out the dislocation and immigration of the black. Additionally, the author discusses racism due to the fact that Nigeria was her homeland. In fact, she explains the universal human experience in the United States. The author examines the blackness in Nigeria, Britain, and America. She describes the African American as a black person who had slave ancestors. Apparently, the African American students link with the Black Student Association whereas the American African join the African Student Association. Therefore, it is important for the author to highlight her view on race in America because it enlightens the society on the racism reality. Consequently, the Americans associate race and class with poor whites and blacks (Adichie, 2014). The writer defines some words used by the Americans to describe the blacks .For instance, a beautiful woman is an ordinary looking black woman. Therefore, they do not appreciate the beauty and elegance in the black community.

The Americanah is an empathetic and precise novel that expresses the distressing realities of time regarding to racism in America. Racism subjects individuals to torture, military might, and imperialism in the American Empire. The Pakistan, Yemenis, and Arabs are oppressed by the Americans through economic advancement and exploitation of capitalism (Lara, 2016). Furthermore, there are free trade agreements and prisons that detain young black men. Surprisingly, there is too much expectation from Americanah that has massive achievement on relations between America and races. The novel has enlarged my perspective about people who do not want to explicitly discuss racism in America.
