The health needs of the asylum seekers and the refugees broadly cover fie areas which firstly includes mental health. Most of these individuals have a history of traumatic experiences which has an effect on their mental health (Phillips, 2013). This paper aims to highlight the major five health needs of the refugees and the asylum seekers.
The health needs of these people include the physical needs, the psychological needs, counselling, isolation and communication. In terms of the physical needs there is a requirement for screening of the disease while the refugees enter the new country. Immunization is an important requirement for these people. There are also various psychological needs of the asylum seekers and the refugees. Symptoms are shown of anxiety, depression and panic attacks. They show reduced patterns of sleep along with memory problems and problems of concentration. In addition social isolation along with poverty has a major impact on the psychological health of these people. Often these individuals require counselling. However most of the time they not familiar with the process where they have to openly share their feelings with an outsider who are not part of their family circle. Isolation is one of the significant problems that the refugees and the asylum seekers face. In such prevailing conditions. The refugee community organizations play an important role in offering support to these refugees while acting as their advocates. They aim to provide information along with orientation in order reduce the isolation experienced by many of the refugees. Finally communication is perceived as an eminent part of the needs of these individuals (Burnett & Peel, 2001).
Depression as well as anxiety is found in these asylum seekers. Post-traumatic stress disorder is one of the main mental health conditions that affect these people. Communicable disease is quite prevalent among the asylum seekers and the refugees. They mostly migrate from countries where they are effected by endemic diseases. The health of the women is an important aspect along with the non-communicable diseases.
