Discuss the importance of achieving effective mentorship in clinical practice.
Student mentorship within the clinical environment is an important aspect of the nursing training. Mentorship, when a student is trained to become a nurse, should give both the theory learned in class and the practice session an equal weight when assessing the students' ability to fit in the ever demanding nursing industry (Chandan & Watts 2012, p. 34). There have been calls to improve the clinical learning environment. However, it has been difficult to offer effective mentorship programs to the nursing students. This paper will examine the importance building trust between mentors and nursing students during mentorship programs (Duffy, 2003, p. 33).
Mentorship within nursing has attracted a lot of interest from researchers because it from an integral part of the students' future practice. Although there have been numerous studies focussing on the role of mentorship within the clinical setup, little has been done to address the importance of trust in effective mentorship (Moseley & Davies 2008, p. 1630).
The importance building trust between mentors and nursing students during mentorship programs. Nursing students spend almost half of their school years in mentorship programs. Therefore, it is important to obtain quality and effective mentoring before embarking on actual practice. Mentors should create a supportive and positive learning environment for the students. Likewise, mentors should use acceptable assessment methods and provide report accurate and well-informed assessment that portrays an authentic picture of the students’ performance (Hunt L et al 2012, p. 351).
A mentor is defined as a person who facilitates learning, supervises and assesses their students during the practice sessions. Effective mentorship that develops effective students who become confident and competent professionals who have mastered the art of caring (Teatheredge 2010, p. 19).
According to Hunt L et al (2012, p. 353), Effective mentorship programs build on trust between a mentor and the students assists the latter in the following ways. First, the students are in a position to learn in a supportive and positive learning environment. Second, support the development of the students by creating professional identities, competence, and attributes.
According to Moseley & Davies (2008, p. 1634), mentors have the responsibility of acting as gatekeepers when modelling the nursing professionals. Through positive leadership skills and role modelling, mentors are expected to offer personal support, robust assessment and expert teaching to ensure that their students fit in well in their practice.
The relationship between mentors and their students have a direct effect on developing a productive nursing workforce in future (Chandan & Watts 2012, p. 96). The trust also helps in safeguarding the ongoing reform of the nursing sector aimed at delivering patient-centred care. Lastly, an honest relationship contributes significantly towards the development of skilled nursing professions in future. Based on these roles, mentors have a vital responsibility to create effective mentorship programs for their students (Hunt L et al 2012, p. 354).
Mentors have a major role to play in shaping the future of the nursing workforce and professionals. However, they face challenges in practice which make it difficult of offer effective mentorship to the student nurses. Lack of trust between the mentors and student nurses has been pointed out as a major challenge. The mentor should develop a supportive and positive clinical placement environment that facilitates a mutual relationship with their students towards developing competent and confident future professions.
