Selected Incident
The incident wherein I was able to use the functions of management effectively was helping my mother in setting up her tuition centre. My mother wanted to teach Maths subject as she is really great at Maths, and also because she wanted to help my father financially.
Analysis
Planning
I started planning to set up the business of my mother; the first thing which I did was setting up goals for the business and move in accordance to them. I set up the goal that I have to get at least 10 students for my mother in the starting month itself. In order to do so, I decided on the marketing channel to spread the word about the tuition centre.
Organizing
The second management function is organizing; it is the process of bringing together various resources such as physical, financial and human resources to proceed with the tuition classes. I designed various brochures to be circulated in the daily newspaper, and we brought chairs and table for the student. The initial investment in pulling the resources was done with the saving of my mother and I created an excel sheet to track all the expenses (Robert, 2017).
Staffing
Staffing which is another essential function of the management is putting the right man on the job. Manpower planning, recruitment and selection, remuneration, performance appraisal and training and development are the essential components of staffing. As the business is small and home grown, we just hired a peon who will ensure the cleanliness in the tuition space and also do small tasks (Dessler, Starke & Cyr, 2010).
Directing
Directing is the management function which is related with influencing, mentoring, guiding, supervising for the achievement of the goals of the organization. I and my mother worked towards getting the students. We hung a board of tuition centre and I took the onus of the marketing on Facebook. This was good initiative as we started receiving calls from the student, which was handled by me. I took responsibility of guiding the students to my home and also gave them information in the fees (Marquis & Huston, 2009).
Controlling
The last and another important function of management is controlling, in controlling measures are taken to see if there is any deviation from the desired results. I ensured controlling in the tuition centre by ensuring that the batch strength does not exceed by 10 in one batch. I also took control that the expenses we incurred were being easily met by the fee of the student and we are in a position to make profits (Certo & Certo, 2006)
Critical Evaluation
In my opinion I did a fairly good job in setting up the business venture of my mother and ensuring tight control and hawk eye on the objectives of the organization. My mother was really happy with my performance and in the first month itself we earned revenue of almost $ 1000 in the first month itself. In my view I strongly believe that a good and through understanding of management function helped me in establishing sizable business for my mother and contributed towards the financial health of my family.
