The primary aim of this paper is to discuss the numerous contributions of Fayol in the field of Management and how he proved to be a pioneer in the various models, theories, principles, concepts and ideas of management its functions and relevance on the virtual management during the Covid-19 crisis.
Henry Fayol is known as the Father of General Management. His contribution to the field of Management is priceless and timeless. Henry Fayol has pioneered and shaped the modern management theories, principles, concepts and practices. To understand the significant contribution of Henry Fayol, we need to understand his facets of work. The various facets of Fayol’s work are –
- Classification of Business Functions: According to Henry Fayol, the various activities of a business enterprise can be broadly classified into six categories, viz: technical activities, commercial activities, security activities, financial activities, managerial activities and accounting activities (Hatchuel and Segrestin 2019).
- Classification of Managerial Functions: According to Henry Fayol, managerial functions consist of various segments, and can be classified as, viz: planning, organising, commanding, coordinating and controlling. According to Fayol, these are the five sub-elements of managerial functions (Commerceatease.com. 2022).
- Qualities Required in Management: According to Henry Fayol, the qualities required in management are the elements that are the core abilities necessary to conduct a managerial function effectively. The various qualities required in management as per Henry Fayol can be, viz: mental, moral, physical, education, expertise and technical (Hussain, HAQUE and Baloch 2019).
- General Principles of Management: Via the general principles of management, Fayol enumerated fourteen principles. These are, viz: division of work, authority and responsibility, discipline, unity of command, unity of direction, subordination of individual to general interest, remuneration of personnel, centralisation, scalar chain, order, equity, stability of tenure, initiative, union in strength (Hatchuel and Segrestin 2019).
In case of virtual management, brought over by the Covid-19 pandemic, the principles, concepts and theories of management according to Henry Fayol, are still relevant and are integral in the working of any organisation. The primary facets of management principles indoctrinated by Fayol remain the same, for example, the various categories of business function, the various sub-facets of general management, the various quality possession for better management and so on. The core ideology of Fayol’s business management shapes the modern day businesses from inside out. Hence, even in virtual management, only the modus operandi has changed, keeping the core facets intact (Hatchuel and Segrestin 2019).
