Last week’s Tutorial provided an overview of using Excel to perform data analysis. This week, we look at ways of exploring features of a single variable and learn how to look for relationships between two variables. As mentioned last week, we should identify the data type (numerical or categorical) before we start analysis, as the appropriate technique for analysis mostly depends on the type of data we are dealing with. A brief guide of available techniques is presented in Appendix -

We continue to analyse the dataset purchased from the consumer data provider which contains information on Smartphone usage as well as other related demographic data. Specifically, the aims of this tutorial are to:

  • Produce frequency tables and bar charts
  • Produce summary measures, frequency distributions and histograms
  • Produce comparative summary measures, cross tabulation and scatter diagrams
  • Interpret the results of the univariate and bivariate analysis

a)Your output should include a number of summary measures such as the mean and the standard deviation, etc. There are others such as the quartiles and IQR not included. We can calculate them explicitly using Excel functions and formulas.

Does there appear to be any difference in how much smartphone owners spend on their phone per month across the four main geoTribe categories (Achievers, Crusaders, Independents and Suburban Splendour?)

In this exercise we are investigating the existence of a relationship between MonthlyBill and geoTribe. Before checking for the existence of relationship, we need to establish the type of variables we are dealing with, and which variable is the dependent variable out of the two variables.

• What types of variables are MonthlyBill and geoTribe?
• Which of the two is the dependent variable for this exercise?
  1. b) Check if there are any potential outliers.

In cell D41, calculate the lower fence with the formula =D37-(1.5*D39) Your turn – enter a formula for an upper fence in cell D42. Based on your fences are there any potential outliers?

  1. c) Determine the age range of the oldest 10% of smartphone owners.
